Just installed a second hand RNS-E that I bought from the forum and I'm having problems with the DVD drive already. Display keeps saying unable to read disc or no sat-nav disc installed. When I try to eject it says empty but I know there is a disc in there.
Am I supposed to do something extra to eject the disc or has anyone else had this problem, or have I just purchased a very expensive radio only?

Please help!!

I'm afraid pressing the eject button should do just that. Is the DVD original or a eerrr "backup"? Was it coded properly for your car? All I can suggest is to disconnect it for 30 mins & reconnect and see if it helps.

Hi, Yes coded correctly and thinks its a backup DVD. Have tried diconnecting and no joy. Thinks its got to be the DVD drive. Anyone had a similar problem and if so is it complete unit or can just the drive be changed?

Failing that I will try contacting seller as he sent with insurance so will try to do Royal mail claim.

Problem is drives are £150-£200 & if the dvd is inside & it says empty, then doubt its the dvd itself as the drive is not recognising a loaded state, so for me based on your reports its the drive itself, which tbh isnt uncommon for rns units.

Swapping drive isnt to bad, but care to be taken as have to take the whole front unit of to get to 2 of the 4 screws, then lift the lid that has another 5 or so screws which reveals the drive, which has 2 more screws fixed to the chassis.

If not comfortable doing, then I can offer the service obviously at a cost, PM if interested.

Is there a post anywhere on how to change the DVD. I have taken the 'lid' off and can see that it looks dead. One tab on top and one underneath. Searched the US forum and no joy. Any help appreceited.

I just advised pretty much most of it, if you're handy with a screwdriver & technically minded you'll have no issues at all in removing & replacing as its fairly obvious tbh.

copy disks with paper or stuck on labels are too thick and jam up
may be the flap is catching if not lined up if you had the front off
can yo get the front back off and try again
has it had the correct code inserted
has the wrong code been put in too many times

I was just about to start a thread this morning about the very same thing!!

My RNS-E will read audio CDs no problem (although it forget where it was if the car is turned off), but when it comes to ejecting them, it just makes a load of whirring and clicking noises and nothing. I have to keep trying over and over until it eventually gives me the CD back (this is with original CDs too).

Today I got my genuine Audi Sat Nav disc in the post sent to me by the garage I bought the car from and it just says 'Improperly Inserted' and then I press the Nav button, the screen just says 'CD/DVD is unreadable'.

So I take it that my drive has given up too yeah?

mine did this esp when it was hot and had been running for a while. i.e id travel 100miles and when i tried to input my return address it would say dvd unreadable. removed it and blew with a compressor (lots of dust came out) and then used a dvd drive cleaner. it has worked since

I'll try that thanks.

Although this has been happening to me first thing in the morning.

Then yes its possible your laser head is knackered, but give it a clean 1st before condemning the drive.

That maybe the drive sensors tbh, there are some metal arms that push aside when inserting, sensors in the drive unit maybe are intermittantly not detecting the state properly, thus not ejecting.

I could take it apart & test with another drive, albeit at a cost, why not upgrade to mk2 unit, maybe do part ex on yours if its faulty.

Sounds interesting... could you PM me with more details please on both price for replacement drive and price for MK2 unit with part ex.

Hi,
I just found your thread on faulty RNS-E's. I bought a unit from Poland some time ago stupidly over Ebay. It worked for a few hours then when swapping out the sat' nav' disc for a CD it became jammed and wouldn't take the whole disc. Since this happened i've given up on contacting my Polish satnav salesman and replaced the RNS-e with my original symphony unit.
Could you take a look at my unit ?

If so what sort of money are we talking ?

I'd appreciate your help,

Ben

Hi Ben, please pm me & I will happily discuss your options :)
