Hi all

Gonna be picking up an A3 TDI sport sportback next week, it's an '05 with a basic spec. Question is is it easy to change the non multi function steering wheel it's got fitted for a MFSW ?

I have searched but hav'nt found a definite answer and the car does not have cruise control so I'm guessing a new steering wheel ECU etc !?

Got a few plans for it, remap and a few Votex bits, gonna be a bit of a shock after the RS4 !:racer: (apart from the far less visit's to the pumps)

Apart from the wheel you are likely to need steering ecu, airbag wiring harness and access to VCDS to re code.

I am in the process of doing exactly the same on a 2006MY TDI sportback and have got all the bits ( yesterday for the wiring harness ).

Get the car checked on diagnostics to find the part no. of the steering ecu.

Don't go on ebay and assume you can find the correct mfsw because there are loads of adverts that include A3's but the big problem is the airbag. Unless you are prepared to pay £'00s for a new airbag you MUST get the correct wheel to use with your current airbag.

I have all the details to help you should you wish to continue but it has taken me 6 months to source all the correct parts on UK and German ebay together with Audi for the wiring harness.

If you don't have the correct ecu, or the wheel, then the price for parts from Audi to do the conversion (yourself) is over £500. I'm at £134 !

Will need possibly to swap the steering CU & maybe slip ring.

Wish people would stop saying steering ecu, its not an engine control unit.

Wasnt directed at yourself specifically. :)

Looking for someone to fit & code?

Edit: Mike got in b4 me.

Hi Nige - yeah beat you to it !!lol

I thought ecu was - 'electronic control unit' -regardless of where it was ?:p

Anyway I've got 15 of them but only 1 engine !

Slip ring should be ok (suffix D ) as all sportbacks were fitted with them ( according to ETKA ) but need to check chassis numbers.

Biggest problem is getting the correct wheel to fit existing airbag - anyone want to buy a mfsw supposedly fitting an A3 of my year - and it does - but the airbag doesn't ! It's actually off a 2007 A4 S and I bought it on the basis that it would be ok.

As I say - detailed info including part numbers available for 2006 MY sportback ( 05 reg ) should it be required by anyone.

Cheers :beerchug:

ETKA only shows the latest released version that would be fitted to your car, should you need a new one, not neccessarily the original, so on this basis it would probably show the same one for all SB's now as they did amazingly think 1 day, maybe we should make 1 type rather than 10 to save us money overall, although it does show the A version for an 8P5 chassis range.

Took 'em a while to work out it would save them money didn't it ?

From 8P-6A000 001 to 8P-6B000 001 is suffix 'D'

My 05 reg 2006 MY is 8P56A027715 and has suffix D so hopefully if rs4al's chassis number is within this range it should be ok shouldn't it ?

That's why I said that we need to check chassis numbers to be certain. :icon_thumright:

I have a late 2005 sportback and i am fitting the fbmfsw tomorrow so will have my mfsw available
for sensible money.
Its in great condition if your interested

****** !! - where were you when I needed you ???? :(

Been looking for 6 months but got a beaten up old one and refurbed it. Cost £36 but you can't tell now.!

Must have cost you a fortune 'cos it needed a new airbag as well presumably ?

Cheers

Looks a bit more complicated than I first thought, I'll stick with my MFSF (multi function steering finger)

They keep changing there minds, my S3 was wired for auto dim sides, but not wired for other stuff, my A3 was wired for the new style pump that came along in 05 with 2 senders, but had the old pump fitted, audi have no idea when it comes to cost cutting imho, B6/7 are prime examples on the steering CU, make 1 type, cretins.

What is going on there, that wheel looks hideous.

Yeah me also, too many contrasts going on, red, black, alum, silver, piping on carpet with red gaitor, steering wheel, doesnt look right at all.

haha eagle eye i hadn't noticed the carpets. yeah they definitely need to go too, and the inlays would look better in black but that's minor details i think

There is still lots to change,i have had it 3 weeks and it looked like this when i got it,so still very early to judge
The mats were out of my akoya a3,so will do for now

Ah hold on is this the very cheap tdi N8 mentioned to me, 1 hell of a deal if it is for what it had specwise, still red just doesnt do it on the wheel at all.

In your opinion.
I like it,so its all good and everyone else who's seen it in the flesh have really liked it.
But thanks for your opinion

Yeah course, IMHO only, nice to see someone can take critiscism without being an ****. Kudos.

So is this the said deal of a century tdi?

It sure is mate,But i have big Plans.
I sold the akoya a3 which was not an easy decision but with this lined up we went for it.
It was a little tatty but once cleaned has come up well.I fancied a sportback as it would be better for the little un.
I have already fitted the newer spec rear lights, obviously the leather with a few more bits to come.
I also retro fitted roof rails on sunday with MattAndrew which work well against the glass roof.
Then its in for paint in 2 weeks for sline and s3 goodies.
Then wheels to be fitted and then lower.
So its all good fun and it keeps me out of trouble
Cheers Jules

Ah yes, thats the kiddy then, so were the rail holes marked with X on the inside of the roof so they use 1 rook panel for all & just drill holes for cars that need rails?

We didn't notice the X marks, but the inside of the roof has been set for taking the fitments.
I got these new but not from audi,so they came with the full 29 page installation booklet lol
and templates to mark the roof.
It is a big job and took alot of work and drilling 13mm holes in your roof is not an enjoyable experience.
But i'm happy with the end result

Ye know the feeling about drilling roof holes, done a few sharkfins in my time, fun job, hope you used some antirust etc as I always do on any of these I do.
