how much of a nightmare is it?

i fear that the fluid in my car has been the wrong stuff for a while and now the seals in the rack have perished.

am i easier replacing the seals or the rack?

can you replace the seals from either side like on some other cars?

my last b5 was the same mate and its quite a major job, afaik the engine had to come out after discoing the rack ends as the main rack body runs thru the block casting at the rear or summat. Someone else on here asked this a wee while ago so the thread should be within a couple of pages from the front.

Its a bit of a pig. Autodata quotes 8 hours labour but dunno - depends on how handy you are wi a spanner or how quick your local garage works, some can do jobs faster than others if theyve done it before eh so less hours = less cash to pay.

pig of a job and very messy but do-able

the rack slides out through o/s wheel arch once everythings disconnected, no need to pull engine

8 hours sounds very long? would say it took me about 5-6 with plenty of coffee an fag breaks

As you mentioned mate, once done the most important thing is the POWER STEERING FLUID - go to Audi and get the proper stuff, otherwise the seals will be ******** again pretty quickly and you'll be topping up every day!

yeah was one of the first things i was taught when i started serving my time with VW.

i think a lot of people still have no idea theres different types of fluid.
