Hello guys.

Ive been on here for a while but never really posted up much, as I use the forum for advice and using its wonderful search function.....

Anyhoo, I have a 1998 A3 1.8T Sport 3 door. Only mods are a generic remap and CAI. The car has done 130K miles and runs absolutely fine with no hiccups, although since the remap the clutch has been slipping when it comes on full boost. Its only minor, but its not going to get any better!

Basically im after a bit of advice on what clutch kit to go for. Something that will handle the current power, and handle more if i decide to delve deeper into this.

Im temped by a single mass flywheel and some form of uprated clutch.

Pro's and Con's of all options would be grand. Also prices too, as to be honest, that is the main deciding factor in this.

Thanks guys and gals!

Stan

Hi mate i had a solid flywheel and clutch fitted a few months ago and iv not had a problem with it. There is a slight vibration from the flywheel at idle but its not that bad imo the biting point is lower and the pedal is a lot lighter but tbh my clutch was well overdue anyway so i was used to driving with a worn clutch. As for prices i went for this setup because it was actually alot cheaper to do than the dual mass option but i got a luk kit which was £285 including fitting :). Im not sure on the uprated versions though i would definately recommend it.

Thanks for the reply mate.

Ive just had a thought, will my car even have a dual mass flywheel at that age? Or were they all fitted with them?

I guess really i just need a clutch kit as AFAIK the flywheel is ok....

I have the same car as you on the same year so yeah it will unless someone else has had it done before you. Getting the clutch done will be cheaper but if the flywheel is ok now it doesnt mean it wont go later on so if that happened you would need that and another clutch. Imo its better to get both done for peace of mind more than anything else.

Do the clutch and the flywheel. Not doing them as a pair is a mistake.

All 1.8Ts come with a dual mass flywheel.

Accept the extra cost now, else if the DM Flywheel packs up, it will take the new clutch with it. And then you only have to pay for both later on. At which point you will kick yourself for not doing them both in the first place.

I'd consider the solid flywheel conversion. I did this on my A3 1.8T and never regretted it.

Hmmm this makes sense. Especially given the mileage.

Whats the cheapest / best value for money option for doing this? Ive hard of G60 flywheel with VR6 clutch? Is this right?

Thanks for the replies.

You can do the G60 FWheel and the VR clutch yes.

Or there are off the shelf kits for doing this. I used the Valeo one on my A3 and was running ~225 bhp through it with no problems.

Euro car parts do two options with regard to solid conversions. Both come with the flywheel and clutch kit:

Transmech Audi - Euro Car Parts UK

Valeo Audi - Euro Car Parts UK

just had the g60 flywheel and vr6 clutch kit fitted. You won't be disappointed.

Flywheel and bolts cost me about £115 from skoda and £70 for the clutch kit from GSF.

VR6 Clutch kit = 021 198 141 A
G60 Flywheel = 028 105 269 BX
I think you need either 6 or 12 bolts, can't find the part numbers.

Theres a good write up on the briskoda website. which is what I used for the part numbers aswell.

Skoda were the cheapest when it came to the flywheel. VW and audi wanted almost £150. got a 15% off without even asking.

Might also be worth making a call/trip to Euro car parts as i've heard they're doing the complete kit for £230.
