A3 fatter than S3?

Always thought that the S3 would have been wider than the A3.

But from looking at parkers guide, it seems it's not:

• S3 is 1763 mm wide Audi A3 - S3 quattro 3d - Facts & Figures - Parker's
• A3 is 1847 mm wide Audi A3 - 1.8 3d - Facts & Figures - Parker's

Strange! I would have thought the S3 would have had a wider wheel base for more stability, and therefore wider than a normal A3?

yup parkers is gash...when i used to sell cars many moons ago people used to come in quoting it saying my car is worth this much, my reply was always the same whether arrogant or not 'you pay £2.99 for your valuation book, we pay £200-£300 a month for ours, which is more accurate?' - some walked away but to be fair they are working from the disillusion of a book they have bought purely because it says their car is worth more than it really is.....probably why im not a car salesman anymore

That would be because they're now doing 1-50 insurance groups, instead of the 1-20. The group 17 S3 comes out as group 33 in the new ratings. The group 18 one comes out as group 35 now.

I didnt know that. Why have they just made it more complicated for now. 1-20 was ok but 1-50 is bit of a joke.

How does the new group system work then.

parkers also says the S3 weighs 1050KG (200KG less than my old GTI 6) haha

They changed the system because you had the complicated letters after the numbers system as well.

Not too sure, but an E46 M3 is group 20, and so is a Lambo or Veyron, and I know which of those would be more to fix, more risk of getting damaged etc. so I presume it's to make things more accurate.

it's all down to underwriting unfortunately, and underwriters LOVE to make things more complex to nail down the risk they are writing against.... none of us should worry what group it's in as it probably makes a 23.6667878% difference to the overall premium taking into account the 1 million other things you are assessed on...... insurance is only going to get more intrusive as time goes by

My B5 RS4 is only group 39 yet previously it was a group 20! I think this is a good thing as it cost me no more to insure over the s3!!

As an underwtriter lol it is to make the groupings more accurate, as noted above Group 20 was the highest and could cover anything from a M3 to a Veyron, SLR etc not exactly as accurate in terms of risk
