RS3

Mmmm VXR-8, you can get a 2 year old for less than 17k these days, amazing bargain of a car if you can handle going sideways all the time!

I know man, most of people make me laugh "S3 IS SH1T, WORST THING I EVER DID WAS BUY AN S3, SHUD HAVE BOUGHT THIS, BOUGHT THAT"

WELL SELL IT THEN AND SHUT THE F**K UP

:laugh::laugh:

Come on Nath, thats not what I said and you know it there is no need to be rude and OTT. My original quote was quite simple, and was used in context to reasons why I wouldn't bother with an RS3. So take it for face value and in context. I have no plans to sell the S3 as it is a perfectly good car and will continue to see use within my household. I'll just be looking for something else.

As i've said before, there is more to life than Audi, it's just a shame the vast majority of people on forums like this don't like to admit it.

I wasn't talking about you, and I was messing about, just RELAX. I know Ferrari, but I'm not at the level yet in my life, 1 day.

if you're as much of a fanboy as beanoir is making out surely you'd only buy a Lambo

I know I have been looking, hopefully I'll be in the same practice next year so won't need anything economical as I walk to work, so the fuel consumption wont matter. Then a couple grand on mods a get a bring grind every time I turn the key :-D

I went to look at an EVO X yesterday....

Not a fan on the X at all, styling of the 7/8/9 was so much better, its got too heavy and still only a 5 sp manual?! The SST box is not meant to be amazing either. They have dulled it down too much for me. Only problem with the older models is the 4500/5000 mile service intervals! not to mention rock solid ride.

Spot on that.

The cabin was much better than I thought, not AUDI std but not much is. Clean layout, great touch screen MMI and excellent seats.
Oddly enough it had a small boot??
4 drs would be useful, good rear space.

Wouldnt consider the manual with just 5 cogs so plan to try the SST this week if I get a chance. Read some good stuff about the SST on the net but will reserve judgement until Ive tried it.
Styling wise the X is my favourite too.
The dumbing down exercise is partly what got me interested, as daily driver the earlier more hardcore EVOs would be too much for me. Maybe compared to the S3 the EVO X may be too much!

iirc the service interval on the X is 10K so thats thats annual for me and the same as the S3.

Seems like a lot of car for the money, FQ330 with the factory HKS goodies.

Waiting for my account to be activated on Lancer Register so lurking at the minute and trying to get educated.
I know running costs are killer on these things but I need properly understand just how much more compared to an S3, which isnt cheap neither.....

Still loving the S3 so nothing definate, not looking at a replacemnt S3, not until we know whats happening with the new platform.

RS3 would be nice,,,,,,

The "well off" man's Subaru, but an awesome piece of kit apparently. Although I quite like this quote that somebody used to describe one..

She is a mistress who will spend all your money
in return for a great time

Tis` the general consensus mate...

Just want to try and establish just HOW much more than an S3.
If its a bit more then fine, because the equivalent EVO X v S3 is a much cheaper nearly new buy. Couldnt stomach a big jump in running costs.

cheers

Paul EvoX is a GREAT car. If you don't mind switching cabins from Audi to Mitsubishi....everything else, performance wise, the car is unbelievably fast. Especially in the twisties. What's lost in the terms of weight it gains in many other areas. The tuning potential is on a different level too. An equivalent of the S3 stg2+ will run to more than 430hp with more than 53kg of torque. IMHO, X over anything Mitsubishi ever had to offer. As much as we would like to live in a track, we don't. I consider the X to be a far better option than any previous version. It has a lot of presence too, it's HUGE next to an S3 or a VIII evo!

P.S. The boot is much smaller than a normal sedan, since the battery and other parts that are normally in the engine bay were moved back for better weight distribution.

I had a look at these before getting the S3, I agree a lot of car for your money, but it was the other side of things that put me off, the Spoiler for one, and in the UK they will not replace it with another like they do in the states, to over stated for me. 2 was the running costs, and fuel consumption, it has higher running costs for sure over the S3, it was the 330 I was looking at SST, I dare not drive one though may have been swayed, but wanted to get away from like 23 mpg which is what they said I would get in general.
Lovely looking car though, (Bar Spoiler)

The main reasons for looking outside the VAG range is: (and kind of back on topic)

RS3= Might never happen, wouldnt want to pay upwards of 35-40K or so for a car soon to be replaced.

S3= 8P to be replaced next year, lightly used decent spec cars are still mad money despite the 8P coming to the end of its life. And I would have to spend 12-14K+ to get the same car that I already have, just a bit newer.!!!

S4= Very nice car, still too much money for lightly used, not enough grunt for the money IMO.

Golf R= Dont like the way it looks, S3 in a new but less attractive hat, and more expensive.

Its likely the S3 will stick around for a bit and see what AUDI do with the `run out` versions of the S3 or fabled RS3.

cheers

Although I have only just got my S3, well 6 months now or so, I must admit I keep looking at the S4. though I agree over priced, performance wise though it can be remapped easy enough to take it a very reasonable performance, ( I don't think it is that slow in Stock though tbh). The other thing I am really interested in and would be nice to see it on the next RS3, S3 what ever comes, is the setting changing for dampers etc, (optional Extra though) must admit the S3 BE is a little hard for general pottering around, especially the roads around my way, fine on decent roads mind you.
Personally I think the Golf R is way over priced.

Though you have to ask yourself, why do they really need to bring out an RS3? there is not a great deal of competition to an S3, maybe we should do a poll, see who would buy a new one for sure

Ive had a few TT RS on loan from the local audi garage, once the sport button is pressed its a decent car and its very fast aswell, just need the engine in an RS3

Well I just got this month's Audi magazine emailed through to me, I was a good little boy and did what the marketing people wanted me to do, entered the competition and updated my "Model of interest".

I bet you can't guess which one I picked:

Ironically you can actually mail that site, I did so asking about an RS3, they actually phoned me up and left a message on my Answer phone, (pretty peed I was not about) regarding an RS3, or more the case not an RS3, (that they know of) my point if everyone who was really interested mails them who knows :)

Would love a TTRS. Would prefer 8p with that engine but if It don't make an appearance Id look into a TTRS. more for engine than looks!

As has been said above, to find cars to compare to the S3 you need to look at 4 seaters. This basically means hot hatches or saloons. Without doubt there are more focused/hardcore cars out there (e.g. Renault's R26) but the reality is it all comes down to your own individual circumstances. For pure speed and fun, I would have an Aeriel Atom - but hardly suitable for a 55 mile daily commute and not sure I'd be too chuffed with that choice in the middle of winter (or every time it rained) lol

More practical would be an Evo VI modded up to 360bhp (my brother in law has one) - omg it's fast and the handling is immense. BUT, it does less than 10mpg if you drive it properly and only about 20mpg driving sensibly on my commute (I tried it a couple of times to see before I got my S3). So, really fast but nasty interior and WAY too expensive to run when you do 15,000 miles a year (3 services !!!!).

For me, it eventually boiled down to Mk4 R32 (the cheaper to buy option), MkV GTI or S3 - the S3 won as it's faster then the R32 and not much less economical than the GTI on the commute.

Personally, I haven't looked back and certainly wouldn't rather have a CTR, Focus etc. given my own circumstances.

Others will have circumstances that allow them to consider V8's etc. - unfortunately, I don't :(

Someone said above there isn't a car for everyone, and they are spot on (apart from a Ferrari F40 of course lol)

Finally, Ferrari ftw all day long, every day, forever, amen !

Agree with most of that, however as a fair `apples for apples` comparison then the EVO X is a good comparison from a price perspective. EVO 6s, MK4 R32s, MK5s etc are much cheaper generally.

Just as an example. (Ive been doing some homework)

20K gets you a nice 3yr old S3 (low miles/high spec) from a dealer.
20k gets you a nice 2yr old EVO X (low miles/high spec) from a dealer.

Tyres/front pads are similar cost and are changed on a similar frequency.
Service intervals are 10K, which is what I get on my Stage 1 S3 so the same. (in fact `free servicing fr 3 yers if it has the Service pack`)
MPG is similar too.

Im not suggesting the EVO X is to everyones taste (especially on an AUDI forum) but its a very different animal to earlier models, in finish, quality, styling. You cant judge the X by ANY of the previous iterations.

Although Im a fan of the S3 and have driven mine daily for nearly 3 yrs, the EVO X is closer to the S3 than you think if you want something quick, practical and fun.

Cheers
Paul

Whats the life of a clutch like on the EVO X Paul, I know the early ones went through them like I go through bog roll, but have they become more longer lasting on the X do you know?

The S3 is more understated. Styling prefernces will come down to the owner, but the S3s cabin will be alot nicer imo.

Doesnt seem to be a problem, most are still under warranty and the warranty stuff appears to be remarkably minor with no major machanical gremlins.

Most of the Xs seem to be SST (twin clutch paddle shift) and dont seem to like big power tuning, 400+bhp seems an issue. Not sure if that failure or functionality.

The manuals are 5 speed and seem to be the favourite of those planning big power.
But in general clutches are good apparently.

Like I said, the X is a totally differnt animal. The owners of the earlier cars dont like them becasue thay are too, big, fat, civilised etc. IMO it just means they are now a realistic proposition as a daily driver.

Cant believe anything can worse than VAG clutches!

cheers

Agree.

The S3 cabin is nicer, however the EVO is much better than you would think I was amazed at how much better than earlier cars. The GSRs have a Rockford Fossgate system, touchscreen NAv + Hard drive etc, in fact LOTS od std kit, BT, heated flappy mirrors, mega seats, etc.
The layout is very clean and simple, the materials and finish certanly arent AUDI standard.
Styling is more shouty than the S3 but not vulgar.

I like the Evo X, I think it's the nicest looking Evo yet and the interior is actually quite nice looking. They were too expensive when I was looking for my S3 and I have read (no first hand experience though) on several occasionss that they are very thisrty.

If, however, the mpg is actually the same as a S3 and the running/servicing costs are no more, then the Evo X will undoubtedly be a quicker, better handling alternative to the S3 and I will kick myself for not waiting another year and getting one instead of the S3 !

I think you guys are having a laugh aren't you regarding the evo interior? ..A. It is not good looking and B. It is made of cheap materials. I remember sitting in an evo X in the showroom, sat in the recaros and the plastic hole things behind your head fell off! I see no reason to try 'big up' or justify the evo as being a all round great machine because in my opionion it isn't! ..You spend £30k+ on an evo..yes it will be quite well equipped but your money is not going on the interior or build quality..it will be on the internals..the engine and most definitely and importantly the chassis..handling, active yaw control etc. No doubt the EVO x will be a great car to drive and handle because that's what your paying for..nothing else thus why the interior is way below what is imo decent..however to speak about an evo x interior in some way the same as a german machine defeats its whole purpose..its based on a ****** rally machine at end of the day!. I would love to have one for fun but not to own..there are plenty of cars out there which will give an evo a run for its money for the same amount of money whilst still being classy with a well made interior. Love them still, just wouldnt own one. Just my 2p opinion so no flaming! :D
