Auto dimming Mirror conversion

Has anyone converted their standard rear view mirror to an autodimming version?

I have two autodimming mirrors, both VW/Audi items but neither will attatch to the standard mount that my car has. I can easily work out the wiring but I just wondered if anyone knows if there are any that will directly attach.

I've noticed Hazzy Days do them as a retro fit so I'm assuming they just use a direct replacement.. Anyone know for sure?

I'm interested in this but you need a new windscreen that has the auto-dimming mount. You might find a scratch on your windscreen that requires it to be changed under insurance....hint, hint.

Be nice to know if you accomplish this as I have only seen instructions for wiring from an A6.

I retro-fitted one of these. It works perfectly. It's exactly the same part that manufacturers fit OEM; you just don't get the fancy plastic moulding around it. It comes with an adapter to fit it onto the car's existing button mount.

I fitted one to my B6 a few years ago, and have just swapped it onto my new B7 a few days ago.

Save yourself an absolute fortune.

Here are pics from the installation in my B6. The cable runs along the top of the headlining, down the driver's door pillar trim and behind the end of the dash to the fuse box. By tilting open the mini-visor in the centre, I obscured the inch or so of exposed cable from my eye-line. On the outside, it was concealed by the dark band at the top of the windscreen.

The B7 install is identical, except there is no dark band, so it is a bit visible on the outside. A trip to my window tinter will take care of that, though.

In terms of cost, ease of installation and benefit gained, this is one of my favourtie mods ever.

Well its in!

What a nightmare of a job though. I had to use the new adapter I got off ebay and attach it to the existing mount from the autodimming mirror. All in its taken me about 2 hours but knowing what to do now I think I could half that install time.

This is still version 1 of my install... Version 2 will have the wire cover "potted" in with black resin to hide the insides and give a more oem look.

Did you use the OEM cover to hide the wire?

Yes I did. The miror I bought came with the cover. I put some black heat shrink over the wire to neaten it up until I can get it properly hiden.

Thats why the band & oem fitment is better imho, looks much nicer when fitted as per oem to the outside world, but good job regardless & nice find that adapter, cant stand the trailing wire though on a pic higher up, just looks, well no offense tacky in a nice car, but I appreciate changing screen etc can be a pita overall.

But you can't see the trailing wire when you fold down the mini visor.

So sorry guys for uping this old thread but prefer this way rather new one . Yesterday i bought dimming mirror which hasn't got rain sensor and the fixing was glued on the windscreen - i just turn the mirror clockwise and that is . Ok fair bun now where i can find the same fixing - when i change my screen they will supply with one or ? Mirror is OEM Gentex and is came from A4 2004 B6 with light sensor without rain one !
Any help ?
