Today I went shopping to Ikea, couldn't fit the stuff in the boot so I had to drop the roof to fit everything in. Upon opening the roof to take the stuff out, the roof caught one of the boxes and stopped half way between opening and wouldn't close. I was unable to close it so I attempted the manual reset proceedure. What a joke that was!!! In the end I had to drive to my local Audi dealer and ask for assistance before it started to rain. One of the technicians happily came out and sorted it out for me in a few minutes. Not all Audi dealers just wanna rip you off.

He used the manual reset T shaped key thing thats located behind a plastic panel at the drivers side end of the dash. Then we had to manually open the roof, lock it with the key. Then manually close it away again, then it worked from the key. Happy days

Lol - I've done this a few times!! The first time it really did my head in because I thought it was going to be big bucks to sort! I'm now an expert at ripping off that fuse cover and using the largest key in history!!!

my hood stopped just couple of inches short from closing so i looked at your post and used the key to lock it manually but its still giving me "soft top not secure" warning and roof is still not working with the switch. boot is also locked and the indicator lights don't blink when i lock the car. any help will be appreciated Chris555 thanks.

Hey mate, firstly - WHY HAVE YOU HAD THE ROOF DOWN?????? IT'S FREEZZZZING! ;)

I will need to double check this but from memory you have to undo the boot with the key and if you go into the back of the car and take out the ski hatch (centre piece of the back seat) there should be another key hole for the big key to go into - try opening and closing this look and see what happens as I'm sure it's part of the reset procedure.

I will double check now and post my findings!

After double checking it looks as though the rear bit needs locking, so as above place key into the ski hatch lock (its on the inside top) and lock it - it should be obvious when this is done but if your not sure play around a little.

Just so you know I had the exact same problem - once I had done this the problem was gone and never returned - it normally happens when you have someone or something in the back seats which the roof detects and go's into saftey mode.

Thank you so much as i did what you told and it's all normal now. i unlocked the front of the hood and then went into the back keyhole behind arm rest and unlocked it, then i manually locked both back and front afterwards, started the eingine and used the auto switch and it was working :)
thanks again :)

my mrs had prob with the hood, turned out to be the rise and fall shelf in the boot. the man in our local garage opened and closed it a couple of times and all ok. i now do it a couple of times when we hav the hood down or back up...... bit like someone with a compulsive disorder!!

If anyone has one of these locking keys they want to sell, please let me know.

My roof light on the dashboard started flashing whenever the car is started or I press the roof button, but no message in the display. I went to try the manual procedure but my key is missing from its home!?

Thanks in advance for any help.

i cant see it being to much from audi mate

i have the exact same problem in reverse! my roof is stuck shut! i belive this might be due to my car being an avant! and have a kid and my posing days are over!

Well, get this, the part costs £110.11. Does anyone still think the dealer will be reasonably priced? Can anyone give me a bit more detailed description of the key, I.E. what end it has (allen, crosshead etc) and what sort of length the shaft (ooer) is?

Thanks for any help :)

Its a very specific tool, not really something a generic tool from another set would do the job I'm afraid. Plenty of A4 A4 cabs breaking bits on ebay, I would try messaging the sellers and seeing if they have one they will sell you.

Good advise there - this is what I would do for sure - if you don't ask you don't get!

Hi All,

I registered on the site because this post helped me out. I have A4 (04) cabriolet soft top and after similar incident to OP, my front soft top latch was not closing. This post post helped me find the tool and the right page in the manual directly to fix the issue. So wanted to say thanks to others here for writing the posts and uploading pics. Its an old post but still thumbs up.

A.

I did the exact same thing when taking items to the dump the other week, roof hit a box on the back seat and stopped working, manual reset sorted it out but was kind of embarising having to manually do the roof at the dump lol.

Whoever said its to cold for the roof down, I'm one of the people that have it down all the time unless raining or below 5 degrees, that's what heating is for haha

NewHi all I'm new to this forum. My roof wouldn't retract correctly - completed full manual reset and all was fine for a few weeks. Tried to open yesterday and went into fault. I completed 1st part of manual reset by folding roof into roof deck and locked and ignition on press roof down button for 20 sec. But when I went to reopen roof deck with manual key at back the latches will not open!! Any ideas?? The only thing I can think of is my mate manged open boot after 1st cycle which we didn't do on previous reset. Any ideas please

FWIW, Stuck Half Open: I bought my wife a 2006 A4 Cabrio, last year (2015) and again this year, the top has gotten stuck in an incorrect position - with the roof deck open and the top all the way up, including the rear section being down. I wish I had seen it happen, but these things only happen when you aren't watching. The cure, again was to manually lift the top (ignition off) and fold it into the boot - this takes two people to do it correctly - then manually unlook the cover and close it gently (again - two people), then lock it down with the T-handle key. After that, it worked normally. I have no idea why it would get out of sync, but it's scary because you can't drive it with the top half up and the boot cover open. The manual doesn't talk about this half-open situation, but this seems to be the correct way to cure it. I know this has been previously discussed here, but I hope a different description helps somebody.
