Tyre Confusion

Ok I went and got a new tyre fitted yesterday as I got a puncture that couldn't be fixed (gutted as the tyre was nearly new).

Had to buy another Bridgestone as I was only replacing the one tyre, now here is where it gets confusing.

I have 225/40/R18 92Y on the car at the moment but the guy has fitted a 225/40/R18 92W XL ?

I didn't notice this until today so I guess my question is does it really matter that the tyre is one speed rating down and it's an XL (whatever that means)? And if so, can I go back and ask them to change it as I have already left the premises?

The car is only a 140 Diesel so I doubt I will be getting anywhere near the 168mph limit of the new tyre.

Its extra load just stronger side walls,wont make any difference mate as all low profile tyres are normally xl in a fashion,the speed rating you could moan at but 'W' rating is something like 168mph and 'Y' is 186 i think but depends if your going to go those speeds,ring them see what they say

I would want the same tyres on! XL is extra load...

I would want them matched too. XL, as said, means extra load, meaning the sidewalls will be stiffer. Have a think about what that means about the way the two different tyres will behave under cornering loads. I wouldn't like it!

The speed rating must be a 'Y' fitted as that is what is recommended by Audi, if you were to have an accident you insurance may be invalid. Go back to the garage and get another tyre put on that is correct, not worth taking a chance on it mate.

Mate we get em in with bald tyres and they still get paid out 99.9% of the time which annoys the Fluck out of me,people put on what they want,Ryan they cant moan at the end of the day they have not matched it up there mistake not yours

Ok, I spoke to a local tyre supplier today for a bit of advice. He said although you are not meant to go down a speed rating unless you are getting close to the tyre's speed threshold then it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

The more important part he said is whether all the tyres are XL and if the load rating is the same, as stated above by others that the construction of the sidewall is different and would give different feedback (I have checked and the other 3 tyres are also extra load rated and have the same load rating so this is not an issue).

He said if I'm concerned then just go back and explain to the fitter he has fitted the wrong speed rating.
