After a recent trip down to see a friend on here (adamss24) for some work on my car. Thermostat, cambelt, water pump,and all other belts (big thanks and without hesitation can readily recomend him to anyone needing work on there car)i was telling him about the hesitation and general sluggishness in performance. Nothing evident was found and then he asked where i filled up. The answer was usually tescos as i pass it to and from work. Ouch was the reply and was told to put in Shell or Bp, so when the tank was almost on a quarter i filled it up with normal shell diesel and WOW what a difference it has made, there is no hesitation now just a crisp and much more responsive boost to my acceleration. I cant believe the terrible quality of the fuels that come from supermarkets and from now will only use shell(even though its 15 miles to the nearest for me). Just thought id share this with you all and cant wait to try the vpower stuff:eyebrows:. Once again a big thanks and recomendation to adamss24 for all that you have helped me with:thumbsup: top bloke.

a mate of mine is in the trade with fuels and believe it or not they all come form the same place its just the additives they put in the fuel at the pump that make all the difference!!

i stopped using tesco a few years back i was driving a petrol car then and when i filled at tesco i always used to get less mpg and car would run like a bag of spanners!!!
 
Anyone had any experience with the v-power diesel / standard diesel?

My dad has a citroen with a 1.6hdi and he swears by the v-power diesel, but the price difference is about 10p per litre if not more!
 
Have you noticed any difference between shell/bp diesel and supermarket diesel?
 
i used tesco diesel for the first few mths of owning my car and it started to run s**ty so tryed shell and after a week car was better just seemed
smother and where i am shell is cheaper than tesco at £1.15 L any way so its all good ;-)
 
I use tesco occasionally, although i usually use shell or esso (I work for esso). I haven't noticed any difference with this new shell fuelsave though
 
i only use V-Power in my V6 TDI QS

5 years ago we changed my wifes car to a 1.0 micra which hardly moved until we put in optimax which made it fun to drive and still on vpower.Similar increased perf in S3 then 1.9 TDI Quattro and 2.5 TDI quattro manual and triptronic but you can really notice the effect in shopping trollies if proof is needed
 
I understand that V-power unleaded in a petrol engine (particularly turbo) makes a BIG difference ( higher octane). But I don't understand the difference in a diesel fuel. Does Octane play a part with diesel as well?
 
well that confirms the difference in fuels and from now on its shell all the way. I dont know for sure but i think its the extra additives in derv and not the octane level but i maybe wrong.I have also been told that if you use supermarket stuff that adding a little petrol to a tank full will give the same result, i think im a bit reluctant to try this though

If you have trimethylpentane in your diesel then i pitty you.

Cetane for diesel and the aditives in vpower did used to make a difference in my leon.

I rolling roaded it when i got it Leon 110, and it put out 108bhp, which i thought was great.

been using v power diesel for about 1000 miles rolled it again before changing the MAF just to see, and got 118bhp

Now some of that could come down to atmosphere etc but a bit would have come from fuel. Intrestingly i changed the MAF and got 122bhp after lol.
 
I always use Vpower diesel in my van now - the sainsbury ***** used to burn away too quick. I have a 2.5td (140) Ren traffic and the first time I switched to vpower it was amazingly different. Dead torquey too.

As for Vpower petrol, Ive always used it in my cars, I can tell a diff when Ive had to put in normal unleaded - Not so much in the RS because I floor it more or less everywhere anyway and its silly power already and ive only ever had to use unleaded in it once but in the A4 1.8TQS I could always tell a difference, seemed raspy and less powerful. Vpower all the way!!!
 
I always used to use Tesco diesel for my 170TDI, but after having some problems with my DPF and doing a bit of research, I found that alot of the other guys with similar cars used either Shell V-Power or BP Ultimate.
Since then I've topped up with nothing but BP Ultimate Diesel and it's running sooo much better now. I also put in some Millers Ecomax with every tankful of Ultimate. Drives lovely now!!
 
I've always put Tesco fuel in mine, going back to the days I was self employed and had a fuel card there, plus the clubcard points build up and we get a free shop every Christmas (£140 +) - sad but true!

However, today I put V-Power diesel in, cost about 125ppl (8p ish more?) so I'll wait and see what happens. It feels quicker but that is inevitably in my head!
 
Once reading this thread i was too curiouse to try v-power diesel at shell.... nice nice i could feel the difference more responsive. I used tesco's and morrisons , morrisons the worse one i guess? a question... how much is the difference between v-power diesel and regular diesel?

Believe it or nit i used to get 400 miles to the tank on supermarket fuel and 500 on esso or bp fuel in my old 306hdi estate, i now normally use merco fuel but an going to stop and start using bp again as my milliage seems to have gone down using the merco fuel and i seem to have developed a flat spot (MAYBE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT BUT WORTH A TRY) my local bp is noemally about 3p a litre dearer but that only means about £1.80 so we'll see how it goes, not sure where my nearest shell station is, a quick googl search i think.
 
Just found this thread & it has got me thinking about the supermarket fuel. I've just signed up for this Free UK fuel prices. 11,085 petrol stations covered - PetrolPrices.com & found that the Esso Diesel round by me is the same price as Tesco so I'll be trying that next time round.

I also looked for premium diesel & only found 2 stations on that site & they were 10 miles from me & the diesel was 11p per litre more expensive. Are you guys saying that only the premium diesel is better for your car & performance or that even the normal diesel is better than the supermarket stuff.
 
Ive never used premium diesel, only the normal stuff for me. And Shell all the way over supermarket fuel
 
If you run a diesel then try a tuning box .Both 2.5 TDi Quattros have them and the increase in perf and mpg is clear but best s/hand because good ones are over £400 new.Got ours on ebay £100 each.Still using V power though

Your mate is also only partialy right, morissons is the worst fuel for any VAG as they use a bioethanol mix of about 15%, this eats at the seals in our petrol system and completely ***** the pipework.

If you notice they no longer adhere to the british standard of fuel.
 
FWIW I also stand by the argument that supermarket fuel is shi&te

I've done just under 200 miles on the V-Power now, and I'm impressed with the fuel consumption. The DTE gauge is indicating I should get 470 + miles from this tank, which is 30 or so more than I'd usually expect to see. I'm tempted to try it again when I fill up.
 
Just my 2 cents. Since i've had my 1.9TDi Avant i've filled up at the same petrol station (Shell) 99% of the time and the engine sounded normal. However the last few I had to get from Esso in a different town, since then I have noticed a knocking sound when the engine starts cold in the morning but goes away after the engine warms up. It never occured to me the fuel could be the cause, I just let it slide until I returned to my regular garage and filled up again (I always run from full to empty then full refill) and since then the engine is back to normal. So theres definetly different diesels out there.
 
you have me thinking now... I am usually an "anywhere will do" kinda bloke... I fill up wherever i run out of fuel.
And I think this may be reflecting in my MPG..
This screen shot isn't up to date but considering... my MPG is all over the place... from 36.5 - 56.4....

I am about 100 miles from an empty tank, so i will drain it as low as i can and try a tank of V-Power and see how the figures look then.

shell is the better one to get and last longer plus if you fill up in the morning you get more for your money ;-)

im a qtr of the way into a fresh tank of Shell. I've used Tesco's for 6 months. So far its ok, seems a little better in the morning.

Will update once i've done a couple of tanks. Wash the old Tesco crap out! :)
 
It's not the first time i've see or heard this. Back a few years ago when diesel prices soared and fuel stations were competing with each other I heard of 50 to 75 miles difference per tank. For me i'm sticking with the garage i'm using now.
 
...and as some of you might have seen on watchdog lastnight, Morrisons filled their pumps wrong AGAIN!!! tut tut...Uneaded coming out the diesel pump IIRC...
