I HATE MAF's!!

I'm sure my title explains what i'm going to talk about.....

I purchased a new MAF in March and had to buy another one in July as my pothole incident killed it in the process of destroying other things at the same time. (i won't explain the story, too long!)

My new one in July was all good and returned the old one back to GSF where i had to fill out a warranty claim form to get a refund for it. I'm still awaiting the claim as it takes 6-8 weeks. In the past 2 months i've noticed my g/s were gradually decreasing and stopped at 200 g/s. I recently changed my breather hoses to Forge and last night put in a new engine block breather valve as it was leaking. Took it for a spin and guess what........... still 200 g/s! I used to run a BMC for a while which gave me 208 g/s. The figures began to drop so i got a Jetex open cone and i'm still at 200 g/s after changing those hoses/pipe thinking it would solve my problem!

So that's another MAF i've got to return and do ANOTHER claim form as soon as the refund on my old one comes back!

Why are MAF's so crap and how many of you have had a similar problem?? Someone told me the MAF's from Audi are stronger than the ones supplied by GSF and ECP. Is this correct?

how much vibration does your maf see in its installation?
how much oily fume is in your intake pipe?
 
ECP do part exchange for about 72GBP and if it goes wrong within the year your can get an exchange.

What do you mean by vibration Bill? The Jetex i bought from you recently i have connected and it's sitting on that black plastic panel underneath it. I've simply connected it and left it because it hung down and just rests there flat. I haven't checked my TIP yet but i will do today.

Could this be an induction kit issue?
I did hear VAG mafs are not a fan of cone filters? or maybe just because the filter and maf are not secured??
 
vibration/shocks damage MAF's

remember how the std airbox sits on rubber mounts..
usually kills them, does not make them under read.

BMC to Jetex on GeorgeS3's gained 15g/s - impressive gains
 
so Bill... if i decide to use a jetex cone filter...
Should the bracket to hold it in position be solid to the body?... solid with a rubber bush at each end? made from a flexable material?
I was planning on using the holes on the maf which normaly hold it into the air box to mount my braket on.
 
how does the jetex compare to the standard box with uprated panel Bill? assuming CAI attached
 
I doubt you would see very much increase in g/s with a uprated panel filter and a CAI, maybe 5 -8 g/s.

A Jetex with a good CAI will give you very good gains and keep your intake temps pretty good too. I think you could see anything from 10 - 15 g/s.

we saw a little more on tufftys on the dyno I think.. but it was'nt wow power difference by any means.. I cant remember the figures tho. might be on a log somewhere maybe
 
the reason i asked is that the BMC is supposed to be down on G/S when compared to the S3 panelled box filter.......

some folks have used those double ended rubber bonded bobbins.. which seemed neat.
RS sell them I believe
 
Bill, when you fit the jetex filters to customer cars, do you just put them straight onto the maf in the engine bay, or do you put them on the end of a carbonio style cold air pipe?
 
Or onto a coulpers coming of the maf to take the filter closer to the wing.

Is the best air feed going to come directly from the maf or moving the filter another 40/50mm closer to the inner wing?
 
Ive got my filter pretty close to the wing so its not as close to the engine and got the wing feed to it. My filter is about 15 -20cm away from the maf housing. I want to try and get a air feed from the bumper to it but havent really looked into yet.

I think the best way would be to get a piece of silicone and a alluminum coupler and put the filter as close to the wing as possible and get a good air feed to it from the bumper.

So how should i secure the Jetex then Bill to avoid these vibrations/shocks? I've also been told to buy a MAF from Audi next as they're alot better than the Bosch ones from GSF and ECP! Mucho confusion!

the're all made by bosch. same part where ever you buy it. its just that vag ones have the vag part number on them, original bosch ones just have the bosch number on it.

the reason the're not lasting long is a performance cone filter won't filter the air down to the same partical size as the standard paper filter, ergo, the sensors getting covered in a fine dust and its fooking it up.

there all bosh yes, but i disagree that a cone filter will pass fine dust....every cone filter i have had have been spotless inside ...

Incorrect. Hitachi are another OEM supplier of MAFs on 8Ls as well, depends on your engine code. They might be more reliable than the Bosch ones, may worth give that a try?
 
Well apparently Bosch are the best ones to buy so i don't want to risk it and buy a Hitachi one lol it just sounds dodgy!

Dodgy? lol Never doubt the Japanese on electronics Troopa :p I work in electronics industry and never had any problems with Hitachi products. Got their MAF in mine, had a bit of rough idling, took it out gave it a good blast with isopropyl, and its fine ever since.

Sorry you are just wrong here.
Engines own oil breather system is what contaminates these units, along with the metal film sensor element ageing, and on modded cars, their output is much higher than what was designed.. In the higher flowing BT cars the hybrid is saturated at its 5v output, and the hot film sensor element and circuit fails.

the degredation is both an age thing as well as an oil fume contamination thing.
Rarely incoming dirt unless you have a very poor filter system, or have oiled an induction kit too heavily.
 
never seen a maf covered in engine oil. the breather pipe enters the inlet system after/downstream of the maf anyway. so that doesnt make any sence....
on a modded car the maf will just "see" more air pass it, that wont wear it out faster lool. for a standard airmass to get up to its highest flow signal the engine must be running 400bhp plus id say. dont think the op is near this....

a performance filter is just that.... designed to flow more air more easily. removing some of the restriction caused by the filter.
it does it either by having more filter area.
or a different type of filtering process to trap dirt/dust (ie an oiled filter.. k+n).
or in the case of say a pipercross or similar cone filter it flows the air more easily by simply not filtering the air very well.

the fine dust let thru by the cone filter covers the maf in no time. just like a k+n covers the maf in a fine coating of light oil....

whern you work on as many as me you will see it.. what do you think blows about when the dv vents?????????

wrong... not seen this on quality filters, only foam filters, which i agree, are shyte in the main unless coated with polymer sticky goop
