Grinding Brakes

Hey guys,

My A3 Sportback BE has been grinding it's brakes away since day 1, the car has only done 13,000 miles and it sounds like there is grit in all 4 callipers? Any ideas? Mainly heard when coming to a stop, also saw a 59 plate S3 today with the chrome S3 grill, any ideas how much this costs? Looks much better then my BE grill IMO

Grinding or screeching mate? have you been braking hard since day one, if its stones/grit in between the pad/disc then just take into any garage to remove, if hard breaking then may need new pads/discs or just get discs skimmed.

S3 grill would be between £170-£240, pls fitting, you need it fitted aswell?

I've seen a couple of on ebay for £100+ but from an 07 model, would they fit mine? 09 black edition? Also, is the front bumper that hard to take off? wouldn't mind having a go myself. The brakes grind mate, not screeching or anything, just sounds like grit in all 4 pads but has been doing it all the time?

That would depend on your braking style which is why I asked that question & an inspection which tbh with a torch would take 30 seconds to see what the pads & discs look like atm.

No, yours is facelift, 07 is not.

Depends on how handy you are with these things tbh.

Only way to check brakes conclusively is an inspection, so as per my original post get it jacked up & wheel of.

Okay mate, cheers for the reply so am looking at getting a grill from a dealer? I think i'll get the car booked in, may aswell make use of the warranty
Do you know if Audi will insure me on there cars, Seat never used to as I was only 20?

Be warned mate, the audi warranty wont cover grit in the brakes, it only covers faulty items, this isnt a fault, called wear & tear.

Did you need someone to fit the grill & supply?

Ah you mean courteousy car, if you ask your insurer for a cover note temp for there car then should be fine, most insurers do this if you are putting car into garage for a short while.

i have noticed on alot of the german cars that breaks sometime need to be rebeded. Meaning they are in the correct location but they are not sitting corectly. look up Rebedding breaks on google. it can explain it better. I am new to euro spec cars so i am learning. My Benz and BMW both had the problem untill I rebeded them.

If it turns out to not be a warranty issue then you could be charged, ask the question before so no unwanted bill to pay, get it in writing but be warned they might say we will check but if it is due to road crap we have to charge as its not a car fault, anyway you know the score.

Insurance issue, well there's your problem, Admiral, but yes ask the dealer but I suspect if very young then will be a high excess with audi to use there car or just go hire one for the day.

I had this on mine, it will be without any doubt corrosion on the inner disk face.

Audi warranty the disks etc for 6 months or 6000 miles, ask me how I know.

However I caused a bit of a fuss and had mine done under good will at about 18k, new disks and pads at the rear, however my problem did not go away, and was there until the time we parted company.

Since brand new my a3 had very poor brakes, you would have to push hard to the ground to break and emergency stops were scary. Even my friends Micra had better brakes. I always heard a grind, spongey brakes, not very good stopping distance.

Anyway, 29k miles on I changed all of them to brembo sets and they are much better.

Yes I found the original 288/312 brakes were fairly crap tbh, sticking some 3.2/S3/r32 brakes on my 2 8P's resolved that problem, they stop on a dime now.

How much are we looking for S3/R32 brakes? Are they straight on or modding required?

Fit straight on but you need all the bits and they arent always for sale.

Try fitting some new brake pads first, then brake lines then get some decent after market disc/pad combos like Brembos. I only got brake pads/discs together because they were all shot and I nearly wrapped up.

Well to come next year will be CAI with a TBE system plus a Revo so upgrading the brakes will be a must I think as am gonna be looking around 240bhp if I'm correct?

Nah forget fitting better pads etc, waste of money if you want more braking power, just fit the 345mm setup thats on the S3 & job done, the brake lines, infact all of that kit is very good for our cars, proof in pudding mate, got 2 cars on these & love them.
