S3 Adjustable tie arms, coilovers

doesn't matter if coilovers or normal lowering springs mate... -25mm and above would need tie bars else you end up with over 2 degrees neg camber

<tuffty/>

I need them but they're forbidden for the belgian MOT :ermm:

How many people have lowered their S3 far enough to need to address the front camber?
Im currently deciding how best to sort the issue.

Is that to do with TUV approval? I thought the KW tie bars were TUV approved?

<tuffty/>

Unfortunately not...TUV is for Germany and doesn't count in Belgium :ermm:
I'm looking for adjustable tie-bars that looks OEM.

I will need a set of these when funds allow, l get bad tyre wear on the inner edges of the back.
Anyone now the standard ride height of a S3, wheel center to arch? so l can see how much mines been lowered.

They can't look OEM, because they have an adjustable bit in the middle. I think the Forge ones do look OEM, as they are black, could you not swop the upper ones, so it's not that noticeable?

Indeed, i've seen the Forge ones and they do look the most oem of them all.
Don't know...do you think the top ones are not noticeable?

Depends on your tester I guess, if it's just a basic undercar inspection, then it wouldn't be too noticeable, but if they check these arms for play individually, then it wouldn't matter if they we're on the top or bottom.

Hmm, when you change the suspension you have to go to a different MOT in Belgium, one where they measure the suspension geometry. So I fear for a fail with that much negative camber. Monday I have an appointment for an alignment.

if the test is just geometry then why the OEM ?

I would be worried about the sump if i was going very low
Mines lowered about 50mm ( i think) and even with the bottom ball joints pushed fully in im running too much camber up front.
I get through a pair of front tyres about every year regardless of my driving style.

if you lower your car without adjustable tie arms then you will get the non OEM negative camber, if you lower and use the adjustable tie arms to adjust back to the OEM camber then the geometry check will be passed? Surely? You use the tie arms to bring the camber back to the OEM setup, not to add negative camber, unless you want to. And you are allowed to fit non OEM parts anyway aren't you?? Hence the H&R monotube coilovers in your sig... sorry i'm not really following the logic here

That's the point...there is no reason in the belgian MOT. You can change the dampers and springs but that's it. No poly bushes, no adjustable tie arms, no thicker arbs,....
That's the reason why I have R32 arbs instead of Neuspeed and the dogbone bush is black. All stealth.
So if the camber is out of specs...bad luck. Probably have to put the original suspension back on...which is completely worn :(

ive made my own using the std tie bars so look stealth and you could use a cover to go over the adjustable bit like people use on motocross bikes shockers and surely they would never know.

Do you have a picture of it? Is it strong enough?

So am I right in thinking if I lowered my car (having coilovers put on Thursday) around 40mm I would need to get this sorteed or would it still be fine to drive without them?

if you lowered 40mm you would have a lot of negative camber and hence increased tyre wear on the inside of your wheels, so you would need to get the adjustable tie arms to correct the camber.

Is increased tyre wear the only downside? As I don't really do enough miles for it to matter.

i have heard that lowering your car puts more strain on the tie bars and that the OEM ones are relatively weak and can break, the adjustable ones, whilst being adjustable, are also stronger.... but this is what i have heard and can be taken as hearsay

If you read all the forge stuf about the need for them... you will see a few horror storys.
Standard ones can snap.My cousins TT snapped one without the car being lowered at all, They are said to be under more stress once you lower the car

i'll get some pics for you, mine have been on for 6 months now and not a problem from them.

as for the std ones snapping, i think its because the bush on the hub side ceases up and so crack the bar.

nearly... it is the rose joint that seazes on the hub, that causes it to snap, they are very thin at that end, you can bend them with your hand! aftermarket are a lot stronger
from what i have read, there was a recall on early s3,s to replace the rose joint...

Did this recall cover the TT roadsters too?
Audi told cousin they hadnt seen it happen before so i told him im sure ive seen it before... they said nope... and he had to pay for all the repairs

Mpathe, you selling them on ebay by any chance? Ive seen an exact match on ebay as what your refering to!

Has anyone on here fitted 2 pairs of adjustable tie arms? I've nearly got the funds to finish my suspension off now :), and thought while im at it, is it worth getting 2 pairs?

dani_b19
no they still on the car, not unless someone has knicked mine while ive not been looking

There is no need for both to be adjustable and could actualy cause problems when aligning, i am going to make a fixed stainless pair for my upper ones, purley for cosmetic reasons (and a little added strength) plus i have thousands of polybushes in stock...lol

Dave.
Howmuch would you charge for a pair of fixed arms?
With polly bushs or... the bushs alone and i could just rebush my old arms
