Evening people, I have a year 2000 S3 which I got not long ago. I have previously driven other VAG 1.8t's in an a6 150bhp and a TT 180bhp both of which had an audible turbo but nowhere near as loud as the S3.

When on boost it almost sounds like someone has turned a dyson on behind the glovebox...a very sexy sounding dyson.

It sounds great and sounds to me like a turbo should just a fair bit louder than I was used to having driven the other two cars.......it pulls well, gives good mpg etc so nothing wrong with performance.

My question is are the S3 turbo's rather loud all the time, meaning I have nothing to worry about? Or might it be overboosting which is causing the louder whoosh noise? Like I said performance and mpg are both good.

Any advice welcome.

Thanks

Ben

Hi Ben, have you a cone filter on? if so they are alot louder than the standard airbox, my spool up is very loud with a jetex on....
if everything runs sweet....enjoy...

No no cone filter, standard airbox. However you saying that has tempted me, knock up some sort of heatshield around it and jobs a good'n if it will give it a nice roar.

I absolutely adore the noise it makes spooling up and when on boost, I was praying nothing was wrong but just wanted to make sure.

S3 dave, I'm also in West Yorks(Morley at present), completely standard W reg Silver S3 is what im in, may see you around!

This is normal mate. When my car was standard apart from a Stage 1 remap it did the same thing. Spool up sound is pretty loud on the S3! Nothing to worry about there :) Get a Jetex cone filter and Forge 007 dv!

mine is the same also, nothing to worry about.

I thought this about my s3 when I first got it, turns out a previous owner had drilled several large holes in the bottom of the air box to get more air in, no real negative effects as far as I can see, its just a bit louder. Might be worth having a quick look!

Thanks for the replies guys, puts my mind at rest and I can now just enjoy the sweet sound of boost!

S3 Dave, what does your fab shop specialise in?

Cheers

Ben
