hi guys,

im about to pull the lump out of my 2000 S3 APY as its knackered. In its place will be a 1.9 GT30 powered lump. However having only played with mostly mk2 golfs and once breaking a Leon Cupra im lacking in experience (however an abundance of enthusiasm!!) with regards to engine removal on these newer breed motors. However im quite conversant with 20v lumps having played with them in my old mk2 golf.

I am assuming the front end comes off to enable me to perhaps wheel the lump out? Or does it come out from the top with an engine crane?

Ive read the audi-tech on dropping it from the bottom but that is no good for me as even though ive got a decent little workshop with jacks/stands/crane/tools, a ramp is one thing i dont have!

Any hints/tips/advice will be appreciated. This isnt happening til i get back from my hols in a few weeks but im just gathering info so im ready.

cheers

If your planning on removing the the gearbox as well then you could take the slam panel off and take it out the front

I was limited on space when i took my engine out so i removed the head to give me more room, then dropped it out the bottom with the gearbox on its mount

Ill probably just take the box out aswell as a new clutch and flywheel will be fitted aswell as a new gearbox end mount and fresh oil so itll probably be easier to do it all in a oner. plus it will be a built up long block that will be going in so splitting in the removal stage will make up no time for later on during the refit.

its good to know it will fit out of the front though. Ive got it in my double garage so space isnt that limited for removal and storage afterwards.

cheers for your reply bud

Just as easy as a MK2. The front comes off. Also you don't have the rear engine mount like the Mk2. It just looks hassle because of all the gaff around the thing.
But you'll have to re-gas the AC.

It's very simular to a LC, what happened to your old engine?

And what are do doing with it? If it's rebuildable?

I did it in exactly the same way - and then reassembled in the reverse order back in the car.

Yep i knew id have to regas the aircon, but thats nowt really, one of them jobs for when its back on the road!

Reckon the frontal removal will be used here. If it is pretty much the same as the LC then ill be fine. The reason i cant build it back up when its in is because the replacement lump is already built (JNL racing 1.9).

As for whats wrong with the lump, it was written off by perth audi due to oil pump failure. Hence i bought it at a bit of a bargain price.
