Hi all! New car, few quick questions

Hello everyone, I've been following the forum for a while, but this is my first post. Got my first car a few weeks ago so I thought I would post a couple of pics up

It's a 2000 1.8T



As I said above, It's my first car so I'm unsure on a few things, how long does it usually take for your engines to get up to temperature? Mine seems to take quite a while, but I may just be being paranoid.

Also, the garage I bought it from have overfilled my oil a little bit, I would say about 6-7mm over the maximum line on the dipstick... Should I be worried or can I just wait for it to go down by itself?

hey mate, congrats on a cracking first car.

it takes my 1.8t about 15 mins to be fully upto temp but i drive it like an absolute granny from cold so it might be abit longer than needs be.
also with regards to the oil, make sure your checking the oil on a stone cold engine and a flat surface, either way, over filling the oil CAN cause problems but ive never had any problems when ive slightly over done it, it should just get used up by the engine

to be fair it takes our A3 and the S3 roughly 3-4 miles to get to temp..... thats normal driving.....

and my bet is that the garage have emptied a 5 litre oil can in there, the A3 only takes 4.5 litre.... personally id drain a bit off, i cant see it being massive problem but just to be on the safe side

I'll have a go at draining a bit of oil off tomorrow then, just in case.
Takes my car more than 20 mins usually to get up to temp, but with the climate control on, which I've heard can make a difference..

I would deffo drain some oil out, 6-7 seems far too much over. Think its ok about 2mm over but 6-7mm is too much.

Alright mate, once your engine gets up to temp does it stay there okay? it should sit rock steady at the 90 degrees mark on the dash.

The temp does stick at 90 once it gets there, but it often takes the best part of half an hour to get there, slightly quicker if i put my foot down a little bit. Unfortunately I haven't done many trips longer than about 12 miles or 20-30 mins or so, so I haven't had much opportunity to test it yet..

Going to drain the excess oil off tomorrow at my girlfiend's dad's house because I don't have the tools, axle stands or anything at home.. First time I've done it, so I'll let you know if i run into any problems hehe

i have only had the engine temp take a while to get to running temp since i had my water pump done, nothing wrong with it, just means you may have had yours changed too, (from a plastic 1 to a metal 1) it just works better.

Could be a sticky thermostat tbh... those and the coolant temp sensor are a fairly common fault thats easily and relatively cheaply fixed.

The stat is around a tenner (depending on where you get it) but is a awkward little begger to get too... you would need some G12 coolant too to top up afterwards (G12 plus plus is the latest variant)

Well I had the cam belt and tensioners done before I picked the car up, I didn't think they were going to do the water pump, but you may be right.

Not sure if I'll bother replacing the thermostat, sounds a bit fiddly to me for the moment but thanks for the advice tuffty.

In lighter news, I drained off some oil and it's now sitting bang on the maximum line One less thing to worry about..
