You can download it from here http://www.ross-tech.com/products.html
From what I understand, that is the official version that comes registered etc.
Im unaware If you could download it from a torrent site etc but Im sure someone
will be along shortly to clarify as I'd like to know too.

The Nez :)

i've been wanting something like this for a while; be interesting to see what the answer is. I have a 55plate a3 sport, what cable/software would i need?

Guys, if you look at the Ross-Tech site, you'll see that they don't list it as just "a cable".

It's a License, plus the interface cable which you buy.

http://www.ross-tech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=VCuCAN&Category_Code=VAGCOM

Any other 'ebay' cables means using an unlicensed copy of the software, and is against the EULA (End-Used License Agreement) which you click to agree to, when you install the software.

Using an eBay cable is actually illegal. -Sorry.

Of course, I usually get told that it doesn't matter, and that this isn't really breaking the law... or it doesn't really hurt anybody, but it DOES prevent revenues from reaching Ross-Tech, and they DO support the whole DIY car community, so I would beg you to consider their input, and NOT go with the eBay version. The only people who win are the Chinese knock-off manufacturers.

I've just bought a GENUINE cable and NHN (Nigel) does them for a really good price too. It's a proper cable which lets you get into all features with updates etc, to keep everything in order. This is the best way to go and for around £245, will save you and your friends money with each use and may earn you some beers too.

I've seen vagcom being sold for £250 odd, and some for £30... what is the difference? Is it the difference betweel legal/illegal or are there other differences?

Illegal. You're buying the cable, and they're giving you an illegal version of the software, with no license.

It's also out of date software, the cable won't run the latest versions.

<<<i bought a can-bus lead from bestofferbuy.com for 22 quid came with 805 Software. Had no dramas with it either. Managed to reset DTC, diagnose, and recode windows and autolock/unlock. Have a 2004 A3 8P>>>

+1

This also is unlicensed and illegal.

I'm not sure whether the website itself is illegal or not.

They do not sell the genuine Ross-Tech cable.

Latest VCDS software version is 10.6.

As its Ross Tech that writes the software I can only guess they are illegal, It says they are made to the same standard as Ross tech, not licenced under etc.

You could buy and find that version 9 is as high a version as will install without bricking it.

will fit in nicely with my music and movie collection then :icon_thumright:

I really hope you're joking...

As regards the web site, they don't sell a license... so -guess what- not legal.

They don't post any address, nor phone number. They don't even say what city or even country they're in. They only operate behind a website.

A quick registratoin lookup shows that the site is hosted in sweden, registered under the name 'Gottfrid Swartholm'. the registration address is a PO box in Stockholm.

yeah... that's legal. ...(Hint: NOT!)

Just buy the real item from Nigel (NHN) and don't look back.

Fully supported software from Ross-Tech, which it continuously evolving to keep up with the changes in VAG vehicle electronics.

well i'm gunna give the £20 cable a go. if there's anything it can't do, that a genuine one can then i'll be straight on the blower to NHN for one.

as for supporting the work ross-tech has done, how about supporting the work audi/VAG have done and go in for a £40 diagnostic everytime instead??

VWAddict (and anyone else sat on a high horse), i suppose if someone offered you "genuine" ray ban shades for a tenner, or a 15 euro rolex on some spanish beach you'd say no thanks, that's illegal... can guarantee there's not 1 smoker who wouldn't buy knock-off/tax free ciggies if offered too...

I got the cable from Nigel some time ago and VCDS had a few updates in the meantime, which work with it. If you prefer a counterfeit go for it.

Absolutely I would avoid them, as it happens. We're not all like you.

At my job, there's only three or four "instant dismissal" transgressions, and unlicensed software or illegal audio/video is one of them.

Having seen a couple of industries decimated by piracy, and with a couple of colleagues having lost companies as a result, you may be assured that I don't go in for it.

Audi sell a service. You may use it or not, it requires no license.

If your consience isn't troubled, go ahead. -I certainly hope that nobody ever rips YOU off, but if they do, I hope you're man enough to make the connection.

I'm not trying to be "on my high horse" as you say, but I AM pointing out the legal facts.

As I mentioned in my first post in the thread, Of course, someone who wants to do something cheaply will take offence at what I say, and call me names. -It's like being able to see the future, sometimes.
