your oil pump pick up

19mm hex for sump plug, 5mm hex for turbo oil drain
5mm hex drive, ball end for those by the bell housing.
vag sump sealer tube
10mm hex socket to drop off the pump pickup
gunk, rags

threads on these bolts are m7 so dont loose one, you will not find one like it in your bitty box

Im going to change my oil, Mobil 1 Super S 10w/40 this should be fine shouldn't it. Last owner used 10w/40 german brand (cant remember the make).

i found this out a couple months ago changing the clutch/flywheel on an a3. m7 bolts. lose one and theyre like rocking horse poo!

torque wrench would be good for the list too

10nm on the sump bolts

personally id stick with 5w40 given how hot these things run and how they like to bake oil

fuchs do a lovely one, i stick to quantum platinum as value wise its hard to beat

Another job for me to do when changing the oil sensor on the bottom of the sump, seems stupid not to do it while the oil is dropped...

Now that most garages use a Vacuum Pump to extract the oil when doing a oil change, surly this can't be as good as removing the sump plug and doing a a proper drain ?
I would of thought that all kinds of "stuff" is left in that sump ?

absolutely. cutting corners normally has its pitfalls (same as only changing the oil every 20k!!)

Just changed my oil 2night first thing i do when taking ownership of a 2nd hand car. Plugs tomorrow & fuel filter on Monday.

One thing i really want done is the Quattro oil & filter. Know anyone willing to help out ? :meeting:

when removing the sump is it just the 20 allen key bolts, the turbo return and the level/temp sensor that need removed?
ELSA talks about 3 bigger bolts from the gearbox to the sump that need removed but i can't find part numbers for them, can anyone shed any light on it?

when i did the sump on my a3 it was just the allen keys, but on my s3 it had the 3 larger bolts as well

i just re-used them, didnt even know they were there till i got under it, havent had any problems so far

does the AMK S3 have the 2 bolts that you access through the flywheel cut out aswell?
I have a diagram from elsawin and it just shows 20 bolts round the edge of the sump and the 3 big bolts through the gearbox but doesnt mention anything about the flywheel

may be a stupid question, sorry if it is

also a mate is moaning at me telling me I would be stupid to not change the big end bearings while I have the sump off, I think that's slightly over the top and a considerably bigger job

anyone else done this?

Hi guys! i had this problem last week so i got a mate of mine whos done loads of vag cars up in his work. within a few hours and numerous cups of coffee later, he had taken the sump off, cleaned it and the pick up pipe!

You would not believe the ***** that had formed from the old oil, ud swear it was granite!!! Audi's long life service plan can go to F**k from now on! lol he checked oil pressure before and after and was a-ok so oil pump is fine and everything else!

Would have got some pics but i forgot my camera! My advice, change the oil every 6-7k miles???? dependant on ur driving style??? NOT the 20k Miles audi recommend! lol

Its a cheap enough job to do (abit messy!) but well worth it for the peace of mind! :D

I'm planning to do mine this Sunday and I plan to take some photos and do a wee write up, I'll try and get it all up asap

I've had all the bits sitting for about 2 weeks now but haven't had time to do it yet as stupid work keeps getting in the way, hhhhmmmm is 30 to early to retire :(

Jimmp might be coming round to join in the fun as well and compare cars and stories :)

Thanks, would be good to see some pics of what to do.

I'm 22 and work keeps getting in the way of working on the car, I've got no chance!

done a few more of these lately, AUMs always seem to be the worst

best one though had an oil pressure gauge. just over 2 bar oil pressure when hot, at idle. after 2.8! big big difference

Anyone got part numbers for the oil pickup filter and pipe if the parts are only £12?

Just read this, will get mine seen to on the next service. Its done 105k, not on longlife intervals but i would mind betting its pretty snotted up. I dont think il do it myself though.

Has any one got the part numbers for the oil pick and is it strainer, not sure if their the correct terms, if their not correct me, but the two parts that are recommened to be changed.

they are the correct terms. if your thinking of replacing it because its dirty you dont have to, i cleaned mine up with brake cleaner and petrol, and it came up brilliantly!

i cant struss enuf..... do do this if your cars been on the long life service plan. ive just changed the engine on a 2002 ary 180 engined tt at work.
the exhaust cam had partially seized in the head. spun the cam pulley on the cam by breaking the woodruff keyway. bending valves. bid end bearings were worn.

yep you guessed it, 120k long life servicing..... oil pump pick up was blocked full of bits of hard carbon.

an engine any engine cant have enuf oil changes!

I did this to my s3 the other day.. its done 80k and has been on long life servicing its entire life. After a bit of a thrashing the car would sound noisy, all is good now. Deffo recommend to anyone that hasn't done it.
I'll post some pics up when i get a chance, the pick up was more or less totally blocked and it took me over an hour to clean the sump with a drill and a wire brush attachment bit.

Will be doing mine this weekend depending on weather and work =/

Got a box load of bits to change on the car and just got to get some bits to actually clean the sump and pickup pipe up with.

tbh this is a prime example of how cars have gone backwards......... in the olden days of vag cars (im talking late air cooled stuff and mk1 golfs here) there used to be a low AND a high oil pressure switch. the low pressure switch (in the block) used to be like .6.8 bar looking for that pressure at tick over to 2249 rpm. the high oil pressure switch (in the head) used to look for like 2 bar above 2250 rpm. (revs and oil light switches sensed at the dash pod)

these modern vag cars only have the low pressure switch which means you could be bombing down the motorway at 90mph, stereo booming..... with your blocked oil pump pick up..... having .9 bar of oil pressure (insted of 4-5 bar) completely unaware your engine is eating itself!

scary really!

Agreed this is DEFINATLY something that should be checked on all cars.

i would do a flush before dropping the sump and cleaning the pickup. when i did mine i didnt do a flush and im wishing i had. i am planning on doing a flush and dropping the sump again to make sure none of the wee bits of crap have made there way round and blocked it again because there was quite alot of them.
Check the camcover breather hoses aswell as they were also blocked on mine with thick burnt oil

I also removed and cleaned the cam cover as there was lots of burnt on oil there too

there is a wee guide in the stickies that might help S3 Sump Removal and Refit
