But I agree there are alot of useless ones or maybe useless drivers who just dont care about other road users including school children.....

The biggest danger to school children just down the road from where I live is the parents coming to collect them from school and parking all along the road, including on the double-yellow lines outside the school and very close to the pedestrian crossing. As they park on both sides of the road the space left for passing traffic is quite small and they will then insist on standing in this space with the car door open to put their child or it's sibling into the child seat. The ice-cream van parked outside the school can also be a problem as it's blocks the view of any child running out from between the parked cars. Why do we allow this sort of thing!

Also anyone who has an accident that is deemed to be their fault within say 2 or 3 years of passing their driving test should be automatically made to retake the test.

In connection with the driving test itself, and this is not meant to be sexist, do you know it is easier for a female to pass the test than for a male. The reason is because more females would actually fail the test and therefore the required standard is slightly lower so that the DoT are shown to be politically correct and passing the same number of males and females.

I agree, school gate parking is appalling! Some mums just either cannot park a car (aarrgg) or just too lazy to walk!!! This results in children being put at risk by other childrens selfish parents. Most areas now should have a policy of double yellows by crossings but this is slow to get installed. Sometimes it would be helpful if schools had areas for cars to pick up.

But aside from schools, I still agree some speed cameras have a place, not all but some.

around the country they are probably to make money, but in my area they are only in real danger spots. And if it wasnt for the cameras people wouldnt slow down for some quite dodgy junctions! Im sure this doesnt apply to some other speed cameras I have seen. They dont really bother me, but education is the best form of helping the accident rate, teaching people to use their mirrors for example, being a biker I realise how often people dont use their mirrors and I now always ride assuming they havent seen me.

Sorry Dave, but that's just rubbish.

Well it is according to the many current driving test examiners I know. Maybe that's the way he used to keep his personal pass rates approximately equal, but not as a national policy, as that clearly IS sexual discrimination.

The one that gets my goat is teh speed being played as an evil all the time. One of the girls laid into me in the office as I admit to speeding. A conversation insued and it turns out in the 18months of ownership of her car she has never checked the condition/pressure of tyres, checked the oil, checked the water, had the brakes checked.

Who's the bigger danger? Me driving at 90mph on the motorway in a well maintained car with good tyres or some dappy bint in poorly maintained car wearing hedge hunter tyres?

Back on topic...

Speed cameras don't work in slowing traffic anyway, if they did there wouldn't be many people receiving fines and points from a camera would there?

Sorry Mitch, but that is just rubbish too.

I probably should expand on that

If your reasoning proved your point then you could (also wrongly) say the same about loads of things:........

"POLICE FORCES don't work in STOPPING CRIME anyway, if they did there wouldn't be many people GETTING ARRESTED would there?"

"SECURITY GUARDS IN SHOPS don't work in STOPPING THEFT, if they did there wouldn't be many people GETTING CAUGHT NICKING STUFF would there?"

Just because people are still getting caught breaking the law doesn't mean that the things put in place to stop them aren't working in reducing the problem.

Get rid off all speed cameras and I bet we'd see a significant rise in the average speed on most of those roads, and a rise in accidents on a lot of them.

I have to agree with that, there are a few of those in my office.

I would not say doing 90 on a motorway is speeding, 9/10 times i am on the motorway the lorries in the slow lane are doing 70-80 mph.

At 3am in the morning when the roads are empty, you are in a safe and capable car, are as alert as an owl and the weather is good i see no harm in increasing your speed over what is an age old and out of date speed limit!

As long as you are driving at the conditions of the road and its surroundings.

Getting rid of all speed cameras and replacing them with traffic calming/ road humps/sleeping policemen does the job just as well if not better.

No hidden speed humps, allowing adequte sign posting and warnings beforehand

But this does not make money.

Speedbumps or sleeping policemen on small residential roads is fine. They do this, don't they? I don't see many/any speed cameras on these type of roads.
But putting speed bumps or a sleeping policemen on dual carriageways where the speed limit is 40 or 50mph is going to be a bit dangerous and will slow the traffic by FAR too much, don't you think?

9/10 times i am on the motorway the lorries in the slow lane are doing 70-80 mph.

....I thought lorries are limited to 60mph.

My solution,,, (not yet adopted by the Government, for some reason)

There should be no speed limits,,, and therefore no offence of 'speeding'....

However the consequences of what would then be called 'dangerous driving', should be of a sufficient level to act as a suitable deterrent..... For example if you drive like an idiot at 15mph and seriously injure a kid,,, 5 Years jail.. Kill them,,, the rest of your life behind bars...!!

It is just a matter of finding the right deterrent to prevent 'dangerous driving'......... And speed limits are not a very good one......

Sorry aythree, lets not forget your the only correct one here, god forbid others may have an opinion.

Not all lorries no, i think it is up to the company whether they restrict them, regardless of this when im sitting on the m-way at 70mph+ and im being undertaken, then clearly they are not restricted are they.

That sounds very just,my missus knows a lad who killed two kids not through speeding but drink driving and he is out next year (went in oct 08 )

That old chestnut. Do me a favour fella. :lmfao:

Am I allowed my opinion? Am I allowed to disagree?
I'm responding, with reasons, why I disagree with what people are posting. Do the same, rather than writing weak rubbish like that.

Brilliant

Am I allowed to ask you to grow some?
Probably not.

Well said, if your concentration levels while driving are that poor that you dont notice orange speed cameras or the signs warning of them then tough...

There is proof when accident stat records are looked at that on the sites where there are many accidents (inc vulnerable users) that speed cameras do make a difference!

There are always folk happy to break the law why is the speed camera law any different!!! Law is law! Dont do the speeding and no problems!

Sorry Mitch, but that is just rubbish too.

OK, they do slow traffic in some cases, but in the case of a single fixed camera, it's usually only for a few hundred yards. Besides, but I'd rather see a reduction in accidents than simply getting slower traffic.

Well said, if your concentration levels while driving are that poor that you dont notice orange speed cameras or the signs warning of them then tough...

That's the point though, going a few mph over the limit isn't what kills people, it's the complete lack of concentration; observation; attention; anticipation; consideration and skill displayed by a high percentage of drivers that causes accidents and deaths. While speed cameras catch out a few of those that happen to be distracted while passing the camera, they don't catch people driving dangerously; unroadworthy cars; drivers under the influence of drugs/alcohol; drivers using mobile phones; drivers doing their makeup; drivers eating; drivers smoking; and other generally appalling driving. This might then lead to some of them using inappropriate speed for the road and conditions, and having an accident, but it wasn't speeding that caused the accident.

I'd much rather see a dramatic increase in the number of traffic police on the roads, so that they can actually deal with the people that really need to be taken off the road, than have a speed camera that catches an otherwise good driver going 6mph over the limit for a few seconds in the wrong place. It just seems to me that they're concentrating on the easily measurable aspect of driving, rather than those aspects that actually have a significant impact on safety.

For example if you drive like an idiot at 15mph and seriously injure a kid,,, 5 Years jail.. Kill them,,, the rest of your life behind bars...!!

Well I guess thats why theres murder and then theres manslaughter. There is a difference between meaning to kill and accidently killing someone is different even if the outcome is the same. The sentence shouldnt be equal.

i personaly hate speed cameras, my mate was smashed into at the back of my car because the car behind was too busy looking at his speedo to notice that my mate had stopped infront of him, in my ****** car! Ramming my mate in my car into the car infront of him, i was in the passenger seat as i was over the drink drive limit, the only thing that save the whole of the back of the car from being caved right in was teh fact that the spare wheel was secured in place and helped take some of teh whack up the back!

It could have been worse though mate, that guy could have pushed your mates car over the limit, therefore setting off the cameras and flashing him aswell, then it would have been double whacked up the back!!

sorry to hear that mate.

here is my audi a4 1.8t beofre someone hit her, well i was parked up in traffic !!.......

he said he was more used to motorbikes :tapedshut:!!!! some good job that did me when i lost about 4k as the insurance pi@@ed me about.

oh well i walked away with a few k whiplash but i lost her & moeny so i was upset to say it nice.

I've never seen the point on speed cameras. I see them as a money making scheme as well. What REALLY gets to me in having the average speed cameras out on the motorways for miles on end to save the lives of the workers that aren't there!

Having said that, if there is a speed camera on a dangerous bend or silimar, then ok.

A system I like is to get rid of all speed cameras and replace them with normal traffic lights. The lights are always green and are fitted with radars on them. They track your speed, and if you are speeding they turn red. Stop you for 5 seconds and let you go again. Run the red light, and the camera goes off. Simple!

My 2p.

I think they have a similar scheme in Holland?

They have them in Holland as well? They've got them Portugal too. I think it's a great system for slowing down drivers without the 'piggy bank' image of the normal gatsos.

I'm not 100% sure they have them in Holland, but I think I've heard they do.

This isn't an Aythreee bashing thread, he is trying to have a grown up reasonable discussion on the merits or failings of speed cameras.
You put your point across, he puts his point across. Its very simple how it works.

But alas, I remember the last time I had what I thought was a reasonable discussion on here.

Only draw back in this country is they have to be painted yellow to be visable! Traffic Lights would look odd all yellow.......
