Hi all

I asked on the forum a while ago about non led, halogen drl's. Nobody came back to me with a solution (yeah thanks for that guys!!!!) however i was handed a little help on another forum and felt it may be worth sharing on audi-sport.

I was annoyed with the standard halogen DRL's as they were extremely yellow and boring.

The bulb fitting: PS 19 W was a really unusual bulb which I could not seem to source anywhere. I eventually found that the same bulbs were used by GMC (American turck company). I found a Cadillac forum which mentioned the bulbs and possible replacements (9009/H16's). I searched these and found that Nokya (American again) provided these bulbs in an Arctic White. I decided to purchase the bulbs to see if they would fit and give them a go.....

Ok so the bulbs I ordered finally arrived. Being an eager beaver I cracked the packaging open and got on with the job.

The bulbs I ordered were: Nokya 9009/H16 7000K Arctic White

These were the only replacment I could find online for the current NON LED halogen daytime running lights DRL's.

The Bulbs:

How they compare to the Standard Bulb:

Upon arrival I noticed that the fitment wasnt perfect and I had to remove a "joint" as such from the Nokya bulb cap. This was done easily enough with a Stanley knife (should anybody wish to try this mod, all will be come apparent!).

I then inserted the bulb into the previous cap fitting and attempted to insert into the bulbs housing, this was much harder than I could have first imagined. After some time I managed to jam shut the bulb. It was still rather loose as the fitting is clearly not 100% pefrect. This was resolved by a small amount of duct tape (somebody please inform me if this is safe or not near electicals and high temperatures, if not what alternatives can be used).

After fitting the first bulb I compared to the standard bulb:

Standard:

Nokya:

The photos do not seem to do the bulbs justice as they are much much whiter than the standard PS 19 W bulbs.

I continued with the same process on the other bulb and ended up with the following results:

If someone could please follow up on my earlier question regarding the tape issue it would be really appreciated!

I strongly suggest that anyone with the standard halogen DRL's trys this mod, its a simple yet subtle change which makes the car appear that bit more attractive.

Any questions dont hesitate to ask.

I see no problem with the tape, depending how you used it?

The heat won't be massive even on the rear of the holder and i assume you used the tape to hold the holders in tighter than the clips would allow

Byzan

Correct!

The tape is nowhere near the actual bulb itself its just to make sure that the housing is held in place securely as the fitment was ever so slightly out. Don't that the bulbs banging and smashing around everywhere.

Is this safe?

Looks awesome m8.... i'm definitely going to do it on my a3. Great inspiration thx... the only thing which looks complicated is the bulb itself..as you said, only american nokya matches the requirements ...seriously wth

Have been following your quest on Vagoc and am please it's all worked out!

Good man for posting here to benefits others :icon_thumright:

Hi J8Y, well done in finding these bulbs , they do look really good! Can i ask did you purchase them directly from 'Nokya'? or was there a retailer in the uk that you bought them from?, Thanks Dave.

This thread , i never saw your original request for help , yes the bulb in question is PS 19 W , but i have always know it as H16 , if you google that there are a few suppliers ,here is a bulb a friend has used

Dave, I searched them online and could only find American companies supplying the bulbs, cost more for shipping but I felt if they would fit it would be worth it! Try www.nlmotoring.com

Crypric, The PUTCO bulbs are exactly the same although I felt the Nokya bulbs looked liked they offered a bit more quality (slightly different cap fitting)

Please bare in mind the bulbs are not a 100% perfect fit, they need to be slightly modified upon arrival.

Thanks for the info guys... I'm thinking of buying the bulbs for mine, I was wondering which ones are better to go for, the NOKYA or Putco??

Also between the nokya's "arctic white-7000k" and Putco's "nitro blue-6000k" which one of these has the more blue effect??

A quick response would be appreciated as i'm thinking of purchasing either soon.

Thanks

The A3 user manual says: DRL PS 19w ... isnt the 35w power of the Nokya bulb just too much for the wiring,etc..??

Moneebanwar: I would say the 7000k ones plus the Nokya ones seem a better product then the Putco ones. I have managed to get mine to fit without the use of tape they fit perfecting into the stock housing.

One thing I will say is that make sure you have a have hours to spare. I found it much easier to open the wheel arch liner and change the DLR the main beam at the same time.

Agreed aky20!

If I had more time I would have done this and they would have deffo fit! Did you go for the Nokya in the end?

Hi Mate,

I am looking to do this bulb upgrade but cannot see the pictures of the comparison... can you re-post pics/send em links to pics?

Thanks
Ash

OO after all this time I was looking everywhere for DRL's for 2008 onwards A3's ! I see Ebay sells Nokya H16 bulbs and I went and bought the PIAA H367 after being told they definetely fit 2010 models. I'll need to return or sell these now if the piaa's definetely dont fit- my post earlier compared the size between original and piaa's- big difference! if anyone wants the Piaa H367 brand new, I only got them this morning- PM me :D I live in Scotland you can have them for 25 GBP. thanks
