On the way down to AITP the speedo decided to give up the ghost of the misus A3, i just thought it'll be the sensor in the gearbox....no biggy...but......

on the way back the fuel gauge decided to pack up too!!!! both were coming on intermittently, the fuel gauge read half a tank then just went flat and the fuel light came on about 10 miles from home...we know theres pletny of fuel left in it so its left me scratching my head

i need to get vagcom on it when i get home ideally....has anyone else had any issues like this? im hoping it isnt going to be a 'send the clocks off job'

Hmmmm - weird.....

Not a wiring issue somewhere? But the speedo packing in completely is weird.

I only just made it home mate, it could be worse....

why what happend fella?

Well....

I've had a clunking and banging for a while, which eventually after changing all the suspension components pretty much, turns out to be NS inner and OS outer CV joints - both shagged.

So I thought, ****** it, it'll be OK - it's only 250 miles.

Then made the mistake of fitting my MBC and upping the boost. Brought the torque up from peaks of 245 to peaks of 316 ft/lbs. And I think that then completely shagged it.

It was fine getting there - but not on the way back.

Stopped in the first services on the M6 (100 miles to go) and it started grinding, creaking and squealing (all bad noises). Thought sod it, i'll try and get her home. So I did.

It made it, but getting off the motorway, the car didn't want to turn from where the joint was so shot by this point. The last 2 tight turns into my road and onto the drive finally killed it, and also the extra pressure required from the PAS pump has split a weak spot in the PAS hose that goes from the pump to the rack.

****.

My 2 new complete shafts should be here tomorrow, and will order a hose from Audi today @ £62 inc.

Animal, fuel sender under the back seat. Give it a clean first or the part can be replaced £35-£45 iirc

cheers mate..... i'll vag it tonight and clean up that sensor, just bit of coincidence that both should decide to go together dont you think?

How easy is the gearbox sensor to remove for the speedo?

cheers buddy, i'll have a read *kicks oneself for being a lazy tard :) *

got to clean my fuel sender tomorrow as mine started reading too full all the time. I am right in thinking the S3 has a 60 ltr tank ???

I'll kick your **** in gear, I want it fixing!! lol :p

Fingers crossed it's not gonna cost a fortune.........again! However it was quite fun for me and my mate to try and guess what speed I was doing and how much petrol was left dwon the motorway!:{

Yep that is my lovely A3 and yes I'm Tim's bird, my name is Tara hence the number plate! <3

We wish we would have stayed abit longer and met some of you guys, however tiredness and hangover seriously kicked in and think our friends wanted to go home so we didnt get chance to :(

don't apologise...theres no substitute for experience - and that only comes with age :p

Cheers Nilz, after reading the liks Fins posted im gonna vag it when i get home, clean that sender and check the wiring under the battery box aswell as the 10 amp fuse - it was the speedo that went first though so why would the fuel sensor be linked? i dont get it :(

Finesse, how do you get them diagrams.

Nathan

Woteva Trevor, I know which I'd rather be :p

If Tim hasn't said this already, the fuel gage keeps going from 0ml, 15ml, 40ml, 65ml then back down to 0 again and so on, so its not staying on zero all the time - didnt know whether this info would make a difference!?

Anyway, thank you to everyone who has helped Tim with advice of modification/issues with my car, it is muchly appreciated on my part :)

Also thank you to Tim for doing the work :)

Tara, there was me thinking you was called Tawra...dont know where I got that idea from :moa:

Not sure what the speedo issue would be, but give it a blast and let us know how you get on :)

right, ive took the battery box out and undone/sanded/refitted all three earth points..... had a go at the fuel sensor but unsure if i should or how i am supposed to undo the fuel pipes? if anyone can help..dont wana mess unless i know what im doin - still need to vag it although not expecting anything coming up....ive also checked all the fuses

worth noting that the speedo worked for a few miles on the return trip and then stopped again...it also works now but fully expect it to stop working again soon

does anyone know how to get to the speed sensor in the gearbox? above or below

ok heres the code

00771 - Fuel Level Sensor (G)
30-00 - Open or Short to Plus

this wont clear and also flagged along with implausable signal intermittent to speedo...that cleared though

just reada thread about someone on here who replaced everything including the clocks only to find the problem being a split wire near the starter motor!! cant work that out as the speedo loom appears to go up behing the air box and channel'd below the wiper motor

seems a bit of a coincidence that both have gone togther

You've been told by the boss, Now get working.

Animal i didn't get the pleasure of meeting you on Sunday. Although i was narked off with my car & wanted to keep a low profile as its a shed & i needed Tuffy/Welly & his mate Jonny to make a few pointers to me, which im right on top of now. Got a list & got most the bits. Slowly getting there :)

Daz, were you there mate, I didnt even see you or your car...

I was mate, snook it on the end, it was dirty & i was ashamed of it & it broke down. Soon as i got home i was working on it untill 8pm. It getting there though :)

I was mainly with Tuffy, Welly & Jonny. I did have a sit down in the tent for a short bit. I was in a mood bout my car & few other things so kept a low profile. Turns out i remembered Speedy Steve from years ago from another car club :)

no worries at all mate, i left about 2pm.....earlier than i would have liked but just couldnt last much longer in jeans with that hangover :) will see ya next time, hopefully in a better mood....and when you get it all sorted ;)

Ah ok cool Daz, I may have seen you, as I was in there as well feeding the little one, ah well not to worry, we might be doing a mids meet soon, so if you are up for that, we will keep you posted :)

any thoughts on removing the fuel pipes so i can take out the fuel level sensor :)

first can i just unclip.....second will they spray everywhere? third im not gonna do any damage am i

muches gracias young man!!

i'll have a bash tonight...... gonna have a mooch around to see if i can spot any other issues as Ross tech say the fuel fault is a wiring issue... code 00171 i have decided i hate this car now :(

just unclipped mine , you push a slide bit in at the opposite side to the pipe and it releases them.

getting the sender out looked almost imposible the top bit comes away with a spring inbetween the top and bottom but could I hell as like get the unit out. Think I found the level sensor attached to the side of the unit but had to give in as I was due somewhere :(

bit in the tank seems bigger than the hole :( my tank is just about 1/2 full so might try when its almost empty, car stinks of petrol now and I got quite light headed :)

cheers mate, i had another go earlier but still couldnt get the clips off, is there a special tool? anyway, took the car for a test drive for 3-4 miles and both work fine, gonna take it to work for next few days and see how we get on....

i just used a small screwdriver the bit you push is about 1mm deep and goes most of the way round the front of the connector.

ok If that sorts that bit you can tell me how to get the sender out lol its going to be another 2 weeks before my tanks empty and im not trying again with if 1/2 full.

only upside was I had to treat the leather to get rid of the petrol smell :)

had another go at the fuel level sensor before finger posted and drove the car to work and back, used a few times since and all appears to be fine mate.....if it goes again i'll re-attempt - fingers crossed...

cheers for ya help fella

hi there,

in the past there have been hugh issues with the fuel senders across some of the VAG range. In fact there was a recall in the *US* regarding fuel senders.. do a search..

anyway, going to attempt to either clean / replace my fuel sender. Here's some good links which will hopefully be of some use:
