S3 - GIAC Remap, With or Without HPFP ?

Picking up my new S3 ( MY11 ) on Saturday - will run it for a few weeks, then plan to get the GIAC remap done.

Live reasonably close to StarPerformance in Kirkcaldy, Fife and have spoken to the owner Jim - he recently bought an S3 for himself and rather than just do the standard GIAC re-map he also did the HPFP upgrade, as he believes the standard fuel pump is a bit of a restriction.

I think it's normal to only upgrade to the HPFP if going for Revo Stage 2+, or GIAC Hammer, ie aiming for the big numbers.

Was wondering if anyone else had done the fuel pump with just the standard re-map - you've got to think that someone doing this for a living knows what he's talking about when he does it to his own car ?

Anyone any views if the HPFP is a waste of money along with just the standard re-map ?

HPFP limits fuel even on a mapped Ko3 2.0T , its a must on a Ko4...the standard pump just can't hack it. It can provide 110 bar fuel pressure max , an uprated HPFP such as autotech is 135 I think, but the new standard TSI's pump can hit 150 bar!
The standard HPFP will significantly restrict you in the mid ranges where this engine is at its best and the K04 hits max boost.

The aftermarket options I'm aware of are KMD, Autotech and APR. Is TSI another one ?

The standard TSI pump is just the standard high pressure under bonnet fuel pump in the new 2.0TSI engine found in the Mk6 GTI, and most 2.0T applications apart from the new Golf R. Its main difference is the fuel pump and the chain driven camshafts.
The new TSI HPFP is vastly better as it supply fuel at higher pressures then any APR, KMD or autotech pump, but unfortunately will not fit a 2.0TFSI as its a completely different pump design.

The 2.0TFSI HPFP is driven by the camshaft so its power is directly proportional to engine revs, much like a belt driven centrifugal supercharger. Its ability to supply high pressure fuel is best at higher RPMs when the engine is spinning fastest. However the K04 turbo is a relatively small one, on a stage 2 mapped car it will hit max boost at around 4.5k Revs and tail off after this point. So the turbo is supplying most air in the mid range, but due to the fuel pump design this extra air flow is not met by enough fuel, as the standard pump is weak here.

I think the main reason most people do HPFP at stage 2 is because of the cost and the way software tuners stage their upgrades. Some tuners note even a standard 2.0TFSI will run better with an uprated HPFP on OEM engine map!

yeah, that sounds about right. £400 for the map. £450 HPFP fitted.
312 bhp , torque 314 on pump file, 320 bhp , torque 329 ftlbs on race file with CAI fitted. 321 bhp , 313 ftlbs with new pump fitted. 335 bhp , 363 ftlbs with extreme map installed and fueling issues, so that was taken off.

Jim fitted my autotech internals for £47.00 and I bought them from Regal for £330.00, I'm sure he said the GIAC flash was £442 or £462 can't remember which!

Price seems right and I'd definetly have the fuel pump done my car hasn't been mapped yet and I swear it feels smoother right across the rev range- with a map I'd say it's a must!
