Read a few threads here and elsewhere about oil consumption on the TFSI engines, but mileage per litre had quite a range.

Mine is a 2.0 TFSI and seems to be using a hell of a lot compared to any other car I've owned.

I reckon I've gone through a litre in about 2,500 miles / 4 months.
There are no leaks as far as I can see, I think it's just getting used.

Interested to hear what other's consumption is like.

They say litre per thousand miles, so I'd say thats fair.

Hello mate...

That much oil as quickly as that?! Wow.
Ok, i'm doing a little better then I guess.

Nipper not here yet??

mine did 0.5l in 9000 miles. i guess that depends from engine to engine.
my old car (2.0) did 1.0l in about 1000 miles.

my 2.0t a3 has never used any in the 10k before it was serviced and it has used none in the 1500 miles after the service either

You have got to be kidding mate. Who on earth told you that?. If a car burned that much oil there is desperately something wrong with it.

I find that after an oil change, one sometimes needs to top up oil after a few thousand miles. But after that 'top up', it should be pretty stable.

Audi will say that anything up to about 1L oil per 1000 miles is OK.

My 2.0 TFSI and now my S3 use hardly any (1L per 10 000 miles). I put it down to giving the engine a proper run-in to bed the oil rings...i.e. really loading the engine from low revs in 3rd gear when very new.

If you are having problems with oil consumption, try giving it a really hard thrashing.

********! :jester:

Read up on it. VW and Audi classify the threshold of 'excessive' at 1 bottle every 800 miles.

My Audi uses a quart bottle (near enough to a litre) of oil every 2000 miles or so.

My MkIV VW is also a 2.0, and it uses a bottle every 1200 miles or so. Been that way for 170,000 miles.

My Porsche sips oil also; about every 1500 miles it polishes off a bottle, but then it too is a turbo. 240,000 miles on, and still everything's fine... it just drinks a little oil.

This has been a known thing with some of VW's and Audi's engines for over a decade now.

Since I'm in the habit of checking oil on ALL of my cars at every petrol fill-up, this is not really a problem, but for people who think that there's no need to check the oil level between changes, they get a SERIOUS shock when the light comes on!

Thanks guys, very helpful.

So a litre per 2.5k miles is pretty much normal then.

When I went along to my local Audi dealer to buy some oil for topping up they did say the tfsi burns a fair amount of oil, just didn't realise it would be this much.
My old fsi didn't burn a drop in one year/8k miles.

Sounds about the same as mine mate. I don't use Audi oil when topping up though, I use Castrol.

I think the oil that Audi supply is castrol. Or at least that's what they gave me when I went to buy a top up.... i think.
Cost about £11 a litre.

Known?, perhaps to some degree, but not common. I knew the Diesal's burned a bit but not 1lt per 1k.

If it's true it must be specific engines then. My first VAG car back in 97, was a 95 Golf Gti, and since then I have had succesive VAG cars including Golfs petrol and diesal and my current S3. Never once have I had to put more than little top up during those 13 years of driving. On top of this many of my friends have VAG cars of varying engines and have done for many years, and not one has ever mentioned anything about putting oil in to such a degree.

My S3 was supplied from Audi after its service with Mobil 1 which is not cheap to buy. It would add considerable cost due to the 16k I do a year. If it ever starts burning 1lit per 1k, it's getting sold.

its the same with bmw's too they use oil like crazy but my 1.6fsi doesnt must be the tfsi engine that used oil but its not the same for every car every car is different it all depends i suppose on mileage per year how they get driven etc.. etc...

try giving the engine a flush an using synthetic oil of a higher grade than the std

Yeah its Edge now, also known as SLX 2

Dealer is actually a fair whack cheaper than Halfords aswell.

Remind me.... Castrol Edge 5w-30 for the TFSI, right???

Need to buy some but might not be able to get down to Audi.

You would need to check the viscosity for your engine mate, I'm not sure if TFSI shares the same weight, although it shares one thing, the high fecking price.

Haha. I thought I could get away with being lazy. I'll go check now.... :3sadwalk:

Just been down to audi and bought some oil. Castrol SLX III.... £16 for 1 litre.... or £41 for 5 litres. No brainer really. But I bought the 1 litre :faint:

Mine seems to use well under the litre per thousand miles limit, and usually seems to be about 1 litre every 5-10 000 miles.

Looks like you got Castrated, I can buy that stuff from Audi for £8-9 a litre

Yeah, thats cause I'm very very special in my own little way, lmfao

Actually spending thousands there over the years helps. :)

Well mate you don't have long to wait. You've got a special delivery on its way, with very very special cargo!

This is true & the cargo I will probably see many times a day lmfao, I'm searching ebay for WW2 gas masks, anyone wanna donate there's.

Yep, about right. My A3 cab drinks about a litre for every 1500 miles. Should get better with age hopefully?
