Snap-on Diagnostic tools

Morning all!

I thought I'd do some pre-remap checks last night on my AMK S3 but as I don't have Vagcom I got a buddy of mine to scan it with the snap-on scanner his garage uses. Good news! No fault codes showed up, so i thought we could try and get a gs-1 reading and managed a 170.9, which if I understand correctly gives a rough power figure of 213.63.

Whilst thats all well and good and I'm very pleased with the result that does seem to be a tad high for a 9 year old car. Does any one have any experience of snap-on diagnostic tools? can they be relied upon? I just don't want to drive to r-tech and then get turned away :icon_thumright:.

Not having used one personally it's hard to say. However, Snap-On are THE brand in the motor industry, and in my experience, their equipment has never been anything other than perfect. I can't see why it would give you an incorrect reading, all it is doing is grabbing data from the ECU.

The power figure is about spot on, my friend's 10 year old 210 S3 (also AMK) made 210 bhp through VAG COM mass flow calculation.

It will be fine.

Snap-On tools are living on reputation these days though, their tools are now made in Taiwan I think?(need to double check this one), yet they still charge a premium for you to own the brand. Of course they all come with a lifetime warranty which is what you pay for. I personally think todays Snap-On tool are not as strong or robust as the ones you could buy 10 years ago.

Halfords Professional Tool kits are good value, since they are always on offer/discount, and come with a lifetime warranty too, so long as you have the original purchase receipt.

I agree with you, maybe not as good as they once were, but still not shabby to say the very least. Again, I have used many snap on tools and they have all been spot on.

However, I must admit that my toolkit at home is Halford's Professional, and I have nothing bad to say. I only got a new ratchet (after one breaking) the other day

Who says you need a receipt lol, i like welly broke a ratchet and took it back, said its broke and gave me a new one, no receipt or nothing lol.
