I'm thinking of selling my 2001 s3 but just ain't sure what to do
had any one on here owned a focus Rs mk1 and what are your faults on them
I do love my s3 but some times it's just a bit boring to drive just don't have that fun factor any comments welcome

Love the looks of the mk1 focus. Don't know what they're like to drive though.

my mate has one, can just about keep with it & i have a remap. Good car, build quality aint the best & parts are expensive such the ap racing clutch, brembo brake setup & exhaust system. Buckets are nice though

couple strange things i noticed was no heated front screen, the engine temp gauge has been replaced with a turbo boost gauge, how anyone would know how warm the engine is a mystery

Yeah that's the thing the build quality and no 4wd Its just had to choose
don't want to do it then wish I never

going from an 01 s3 to a mk1 rs isnt worth the change to be honest. There not exactly reliable ad they are getting on a bit now, if i was to change id go for a newer st, they chip up brilliantly and build qualty is alot better.

i had mk1 rs 7 years ago, personallyi really like them the only thing i didnt like was the very uguly dash board, seats are nice but the rest of the interier is awfull, i know what you mean about fun factor though you will definetly be grinning with the rs, the best people to take it to is collins performance they realy know their stuff.

I no what your saying I had a focus st running 290bhp was a great car but very front heavy and at the time had to get rid of it for money reasons
my s3 ain't remaped I was thinking about it but don't want to do it if I am going to sell the s3

I used to have a mk1 Focus not the RS. They drive great mate, handle very well. No real problems with them

My pals got a mk1 RS, its very quick running over 260bhp. He loves it i had a ride out in it the other day went well.

Yeah I have been in one a couple of months back I did enjoy it nice cars on the outside ugly on the inside great cars tho
maybe I need to test drive one see what I think

dont go near a ST unless you do very little miles i had one 295bp they are very thirsty when thrashed your talking 18-22 mpg, sound fantastic though, i had 3inch downpipe and 200 cell sportcat mongoose catback with 4.5inch slashcuts, ggr cais and a radtec intercoler it had more maps than a long distance lorry driver, great car but i used to use 1/2 tank of v-power going for a paper on a sunday morning going the long way around of course.

I had one mate running 290bhp great cars front heavy and like u say very thirsty

Had one of them iswel great car just abit too small and wanna stay with a turbo engine

all my run ins with my mapped S3, the ST's have lost, top end they are crap when boosting from low in the rev range - they have kept with me low down and then tailed off every time - quality wise its a big step backwards

although i have a crush on the ST2/3 shape front end...the rest is fit for the bin IMO - for the year they are built you would expect more, stillso far away from the germans regards quality

Not been in a mk1 RS, but I considered them before getting my S3. I decided against it because;

1. externally they look great (much better than the basic model range) but inside they look hideous, especially the steering wheel
2. stories of major torque-steer makes any B-road that isn't completely smooth a bit of a nightmare (surely this is where they shoud excel)
3. it's just more of an "obvious" performance car compared to the S3, which has that understated performance look about it.

All just my views of course.

Doctor....you know what made me discount it...you'll love this

i got in a mk1, opened and closed the glovebox and got out (sounded far too cheap and nasty) :) then later on whilst owning the S3 got my confirmation that i made the right choice ;) at the time is was a mk1 3-4 yr old Ford or my 2002 S3 for a grand less (and that was 5-6 years old)- tough decision

i personaly would have rs over the S3,i considerd buying one for a weekend toy, looks better and its always gonna be worth a hell of alot more, rs badges always seem collectable, st looks nice too but surely 2.5 v 1.8 how can it be possible to loose out on top end to a s3????

Mk1 RS Focus is always going to be a collectors car, they hold their value well, I think 4k made world wide wasn't it? S3's are more plentiful and requires a few bob thrown at it to make it a better car, not that it was a bad one in the first place.

I considered one, never drove one but loved the look and rarity!
The thing that made me go foran s3 over the rs and all other hatches was the badge, quality additional extras you get and also tuning and power out of the box, I think rs has 212 bhp but I presumed would be harder and more expensive to tune than a turbo car!
The other concern with the rs was the fact ud be seen as a boy racer everywhere u went! The Audi doesn't make you out as they it has more class I think. Either way I'm sure both cars have the good and bad points I weighed them up and s3 came out tops for th all round package and usability whatever the weather!

I think you should map the S3 and keep it. My friend has a Mk1 Focus RS doing 280bhp on a Garrett turbo. His car is VERY quick! I love the typical 'ford performance' feel to it and i definitely have a grin on my face when i get out of it lol. BUT, i wouldn't change the S3 for a Focus RS. They're different types of cars with a complete different feel and IMO my S3 feels alot better to drive.

Depends what type of car you're looking for mate? Give the S3 a map and you won't want to get rid of it trust me :)

the focus is a 2.0 turbo

think 2.5 matey ;)

Erm, are some of you seriously suggesting that you were going to buy a new RS Focus then suddenly opted for a car a fifth of the price??? personally i love the new RS, however were it my money i wouldnt be throwing it at that, id sooner have an 8P S3 (latest shape) - call me mad but i'll never go for a Ford, Vauxhall or similar as long as i live (used to work for Vauxhall many moons ago)

Mk1 RS is 2.0 4-pot Turbo, ST and current RS is 2.5 5-pot.

my error sorry chaps...when people say RS i just think the new one nowadays...the old one was nice and unique but fetch peanuts now when compared to Fords of old - really didnt have one of those down instead of the S3 though, power wise is comparative when mapped, inside they are horrible and wear terribly just like the racing Puma's which all look like sheds on the insides now - Fords will always be Fords unfortunately, sadly they mostly drive better than ours :)

Its a shame the megane 225 didnt have better build quality as there ment to be really great handling cars, although never that keen on the dash of the megane. Wouldnt say the mk1 RS is going to be a collectors car when compared to older RS models as it was never really rated when it came out and the lack of 4 wheel drive takes away from the rally background it comes from. They do look smart but the interiors are cheap and nasty, the mk2 interior is just the same. But if your considering it go and test drive a few, doesnt mater what we think at the end of the day if you enjoy it thats what counts.

Cheers guys for the input I'm gona have alook at acouple the weekend don't think are do it tho
just have to wait and see

my initial post was about a mk1 rs not the mk2 i dont think the new one is comparable with with an 8L S3.

When I got mine was looking at mondeo st220's.
Photo's of the interior looked good, but once got inside the dash and trim plastics were just so cheap and nasty.
Recaro's were the same as in ours and they had a 3.0L V6 but couldnt live with the interior, only looked at one and was put off straight away.

i'd have one as a company car knowing i would be rid within 2 years :) - unlucky for the poor sod who bought it after that 2 years mind :)
