I know this has been covered a few times, this thread is a little different though.

How come mk4 r32 owners upgrade to 25mm front and 22mm rear? Isnt the mk4 r32 the same chassis as ours? Why dont they just use the standard 23mm front and 19mm rear they are equipped with?

in theory, with the upgraded rear one being proportionally larger in comparison to the original rear one, it will give the car a lesser tendancy to understeer

... or as is the way with most boards, they prolly do it because its what everyone else does!

It must be, everyone on here seems to upgrade to 19mm rear and/or 22mm/23mm front.

Whats the standard s2 arb's, are they 16mm rear and 19mm front?

oh it is a kick *** v6, gotta give it credit for that!

only just a V tho is my point but anywho, a lot heavier than the I4 lump, hence the change of ARB s for them to much larger than an S3/A3 user

also, i take it they dont hoop over the front driveshaft?

Not sure, never looked at the r32 or s3 bars in the flesh, why do the s3 ones hoop over?

I think the S3 is 19mm & 14mm rear.
I will measure as I was going to stick a 4 motion 16mm on mine, no point if it's 16mm already...

Heavier engine mate.... although by all accounts its a pretty sorted chassis.... arguably you could upgrade the S3 ARB's to that sorta of size but the general consensus for an S3 driven mostly on the road is the 22mm/19mm combo or R32 23mm/19mm cost sava combo.... this is of course still subjective... the 22mm/19mm combo is based on (some very good) advice from a respected member who bothered to spend the time and money tuning his S3 (Glen of course)...

Its doing my headin , i defo getting the r32 arb, just cant decide on 22mm or 23mm front, i know its only 1mm lol but about £150 difference

i hink seeing its £150 difference i would take the cheaper one. What ever 1mm cannot make £150 of difference

Buy the R32 ARB, if you don't like the way it handles then flog it and get a 22mm... simples...

The 22mm will give the car a more balanced feel by all accounts (maths add up) but the 23mm will retain the more familiar understeer characteristics... overall handling will feel better but its as I said before its subjective.... I personally am happy that I have a degree of understeer to tell me I am on the edge as it suits the way I drive... Glen would run toe out and more neg camber on the front as he prefers a more edgy feel... subjective....

R32 has 23/19
S3 has 19/14

I imagine the R32 arb's were increased in size to cope with the extra weight (handy for us).

S3 will benfit from thicker ARB's do a calc against the R32 & S3 to give you a % of how much stiffer its likely to be. The front R32 arb does hoop over the driveshaft as does the S3, same shape everything except diameter. The bushes for the S3 were always designed for a 23mm arb, the plastic sleeves we all hear so much about were used to increase the diameter of the standard 19mm bar.

replace the rear only with the r32 item... see how that goes!

Has anyone actually calculated any weight transfer differences between the two or lateral loadings.

When it comes to vehicle dynamics unless you have some actual data you are relying on someone's personal feedback which might be completely different to how you would like you car to handle.

Can someone confirm that the MK4 4 motion rear ARB will fit the S3 please, if it doesn't i'll be stuck with it as they are non return items.

Steve

Should do mate. Why you gone for the 4motion and not the r32?

Was going to keep the 19mm front as it doesn't do a bad job, I think the 16mm rear will maybe help balance the car out better.... We will see :)

Actualy it would be interesting to see. When you fitting it?

Prob next week some time as I'm away all weekend. I have all the info ready to sort out over the phone.
