Hit a wall, what now?

thats why i semi-sidelined my Golf (very) GTI and got the S4 haha

so from experience you can dump tons of money into a car, make it more focused but on something as civilised as the S3, youll be stealing its trump card and i think youll kick yourself for doing it JD.

plus Z3Ms look the nuts

See Matt, that's my thought process. I agree with Paul in that they are a superb car and can be made very quick, point to point. But they're not a laugh. They're simply too grown up for that with their 4x4, big seats etc. Now I love that about it, don't get me wrong, but it is very weighty.

I'm sure my mind will change at the slightest bit of wet weather/when winter comes around.

Hmmmmm.

JD you're like an indecisive woman, you'll change your mind again by the weekend :tocktock:

And just think back to January of this year. When mose people had to abandon their BMs and Mercs in the snow the little Audis were the ones flying up the hills :respekt:

im in cheshire this weekend... if i can convince the GF to let us take the "proper gti" i shoud take you out for a run to remind you how much of a giggle cars can be. i can remember getting in the golf after the S4 and the difference was sadly night and day and that made me sad.

JD... it sounds like if you were a stick of rock, youve got clio written all the way though you ;)

i was at a vag meet lastnight, a friend of mine there recently picked up an S3. we had had a look over it (found the usual split breather!) and after three weeks hes already having to dry his eyes after he sold his mk2 G60 and replaced it with the S3

i think cars like the S3, as capable as they are (no question about it, id expect an S3 to leave my old golf for dead..) they just are not an enguaging enough drive

I went through this thought process, so I bought a 205 GTI as a second car. Audi for civilised runs, 205 for thrills :)

:whistle2:

when i first got my quattro etc and was looking at the s3's i thought yer i bet there well fast and handle well good as its a 1.8t and got an s in front of the 3 but after getting my mk2 i realised how rubbish it was at driving fast compared to the mk2. sadly its sorned atm though :(

If people buying s3's for fun knew how civilized they was i doubt they would buy them, id get one in a few.

i went for an s3, mainly because i liked my old golf so much and want something similar... but a bit more of a weapon. Got friends with a3's and always thought they were quite smart but thought going for an S would be a bit more intresting. Have to admit the s3 turned out to be not as great or pleasurable as I thought it would be, but its ok. Definately comfy and fairly quick, but doesnt handle great, its sort of an inbetween car, not a complete nutter but not completely sensible either. Ive not seriously thought of selling as I only had it for 4 months, but i think there are other cars I would prefer, but it already owes me too much so may aswell get some use out of it. Definately not going to bother doing many mods to it as I dont think its really worth it

I think everyone has these thoughts. Would be nice to have a pokey rwd motor for fun but I dont fancy it everyday and thats where the S3 comes in. Comfortable pleasent interior, smooth ride, quiet, looks good and decent mpg. Thats all I need 99% of the time. The other 1% yes you could have more fun in other cars but then living with it for the other 99% of the time is a bitch.

Well, think back to when you had the clio, why did you want the S3? Style, comfort, ease? The s3 is a nice car, very fast and even faster when remapped etc.. With any car you get, mods will always cross your mind because you see other people improving theirs, you want to do the same with yours and its natural! I got a fiesta and i like it alot! Its small, nippy and somewhat cheap but i've been looking for a new car for ages! Im getting one when the insurance companies decide to insure me on a faster, better car! Your S3 is lovely JD!

Are you going to get an s3 then? or an a3, what are you getting for, too tune up?

I've just come from a clio 182 Trophy to my stage 1 S3. It is such a different car to drive and whilst I enjoy the refinement, I don't think I'm quite old enough (29) for one yet. However, I have got a mint 205 gti with a 306 gti6 engine being slotted in, so that should keep me happy for the time being!

It was either an s3 or s2000, but i think i should have gone for the s2000. Think mine will be up for sale soon even though I've only had it for a few months!

what's your budget matt? yum http://bit.ly/cb1kpk
i got on the phone to a guy selling one of those, whilst drunk, a few years ago, made arrangements to see it etc. the next day i realised it was an auto and sacked the whole idea off

S8 = amazing car

that was short listed along side the S4. i want an M5 now though

See a few people here have mentioned the S2000, which was another consideration.

Matt, lol at the Rock saying Clio through and through. I don't want to go back to Renault. The build quality issues put me off for life.

The Z3M coupe to me just seems to shout "fun factor" to me, where as the Audi is almost too . . . refined? Too easy? And therefore boring.

3 maybe 4 times larger. have you been in one? really, really recommend it, something you have to do before you die etc

couldnt be ***** to read the whole thread but heres my take...

i still cant beleive that people are still comparing the S3 to so many other types of cars, it was designed to be a good all rounder, and that it is....it wasnt designed to be a tuneable car IMO and is of a different genre to your jap or indeed nippy french cars - you will not find a more complete package for the year without massively increasing your running costs, thats my challenge to anyone based on my own research

JD.....first things first, you really need a map.... might find myself nipping over to force you to drive a mapped S3 if you havent already :)

give it a go, but it just doesnt sound like jd is completely settled with the s3.

ive got a 1J chassis golf, its remapped, ive made it quicker. it just means i have to brake harder for the corners because there is just no feel or trust in the 1J platform cars, you just have to rely on the infinity grip because there is no steering feel. brakes feel terrible because theyre MASSIVELY over servod, just the last thing in terms of a drivers car

BMW??? Matt you traitor

do you realise how kick *** they are? watch ronin ;)

*giggle giggle* thats awesome! and how often do you see those on the road?

Please forgive me for casting eyes on a BMW

Back to my senses, this can be a very very good deal or a money pit, who would?

honestly, the s4 i had (remapped) was good as gold. i had it at my usual standard, everything was right on the car, took me about 3-4 weeks to sort after that i only ever had to lift the lid to check the oil (never used any) and then to do an oil change.

kick *** cars, but be prepared for a very sterile driving experience

i wont sell my S3 before getting a bit of tuning
See it this way...how about you run and your running shoes laces arent tightned enough?
u cant run fast enough and you wont enjoy your run :p

if you have an S4 you will want an RS4....... i love Z3's, only thing that puts me off is that i have two mates, one had a 1.9, the other a 2.2.....both were written off in the wet with not so enthusiatic driving, death traps IMO let alone with that power in it

the M5's are very nice, but are shovelled with the usual BMW style and graciousness of a card board box, externally the M series are more appealing but the interiors are still god awful and extremely dated

JD needs to drive a mapped S3 before making his mind up..... best thing i ever did by far and i was against maps when i bought

maybe your mates with lame engined z3s were too busy putting on fake tan and not paying attention to the road when they fell off? get the proper engine, thatll make anyone pay attention!!

they got grief for having them dont worry ;) but stickin a bigger engine in a car that cant handle a 1.9 is stupidity :)

Z3 with the M engine isnt a success. M3 is a very well better balanced car and handles suprisingly great.
i think the Z3 doesnt handle good coz of the sort wheelbase and the weight balance

Still looking at S2000's and only bought the S3 at the beginning of the month :/

What's wrong with me - I've ALWAYS wanted an S3, now I have one, I feel I'm too young for it? (28) :(

mmmm i love S2000's, same back end fun but horrible to drive in the wet..... love the centre console as it raises upto your arm....

would only have one as a second car though, totally inpracticle :(
