Hi guys i am currently in the process of getting a RNS E to my 55 reg audi a3 sline which has a single din radio. I was going to buy a RNS E and install it myself afetr buying the double din kit aswell (cage, switches, plastics etc.) but after looking on ebay about some companies that install them for you and fit the RNS E and also use vag to code the DIS and the necessary stuff. is it worth just buying the double kit and a RNS E and doing it myself or would it beb est to pay someone th do it all? if i was going to do it myself is it as simple as changing the single din cage and fitting the RNS E and away you go or do you have to change stuff with the vag like the ECU and MODULES? thanks anthony

Sell your RNS-E for £500, buy a tom tom for £100 and spend the £400 on something a whole lot more interesting!

If you want to make it up to modern standards you will need at least another £500 for bluetooth and a decent Ipod connection.

it looks doable yourself, but a lot of hassle. personally i'd get someone to do it but that's because i don't have the guts to do it myself. if you do then give it a go, and if you mess it up then pay someone to do it. lee brings up a good point about the tomtom, but i'd pick RNS-E over a tomtom personally so i can understand your decision.

here's a link of a DIY article on swapping your single DIN for a double DIN. hope it helps:

yeah im made up with the car pal :) love it to bits saves money big time compared to my 09 r32 i had :) yeah i prefer a rns to a tom tom but i jst dont want to do the double din mod and then buy a rns and fit it and find out i have to have my car re programmed to it n all that coz that is out of my league that is the only problem... does it have to be programmed in or is it as simple as changing the headunit and all done? thanks

needs coding, but my understanding is it's still only a 5minute job. put it this way, you can get ppl to fit you a brand new RNS-E 2010 for £690 quid if you have double DIN. i've seen used units on ebay for a few quid less than that.

not off to the best of starts phil it spent 3hrs with Audi this morning because of an intermittent misfire. (so much for it being more reliable than the 3.2 i wanted :p.) had coil pack changed and it's running fine now! can't wait to get cracking with a few mods, just want my first paycheck to come in!!

depends what you have the rns-e will function from plugin, however if you want your multifunction wheel or cd changer to work that will require coding

haha mate just never talk to me, ill have you bankrupt with one message for in car tech, jonnyc will bankrupt you on engine mods nhn will bankrupt you on retrofits and n8 will bankrupt you on wheels and stance. all in all you should just sell your house now  at least youll have a nice motor to sleep in

without meaning to hijack:

i think the dumbos and Jetex exhaust with facelift rear bumper and Caractere diffuser are my first mods. after that thinking the RNS-E stuff, the FBMFSW, then a few minor engine mods (CAI, neuspeed power pulley, DV, maybe a lighter battery) and i'm done. i really like the BBSs i have, maybe get them sprayed in shiny gunmetal grey colour and a bit of lowering just to finish off. i'll get pre-tinkering photos up as soon as i can. been driving around too much to have time to take photos! and i never thought i'd love the DSG as much as i do. i'm never going back to a manual!!

Sounds like a good plan sub. Glad to see you happy with the car.

Speak with Nigel it's you want it done for all you. He did a doubledin conversion recently for another member. Sure there was a post but I can't remember who or the title of the thread...

2010 mk2 rns fitted for £690, that'll be a 1st cause you cant even buy them for that mate & I've had 3-4 now.

Yeah that was Karim, he did a writeup iirc.

Marnie feel free to PM me & I'll shoot you my number if you want it installed mate.

Thats not for a 2010 mk2 rns mate, thats the chrome dial one which is a mk1, its not the latest trust me & craig I suspect is also offering the chrome dial one & not mk2 2010 rns, craig shuttles around here so maybe he can confirm, but I'm 99% sure its the mk1 rns units he's also offering.

hmm... that's my mistake then. i assumed all the ones with chrome controls were the newest style. damn, this means i may have to spend more money than i wanted on the latest one :ermm:

oh well guess that's why i'm here, trying to learn!

do you really want the ipod functionallity? do you realy want to fork out an extra 500 quid to use an ipod :(

so which is the latest rns? the one with the chrome dials??? also ... you guys are basically saying i should pay for someone to install one to my car and code it rarther than fit it myself? thanks anthony

no that's where the confusion arose for me. when they did the 2nd facelift, they swapped to chrome controls. so you can get an old one with chrome controls, or the new 2010 one (which also has chrome controls, but new hardware).

the way to tell is the part code. the last three numbers before the suffix letter should be 193 for it to be the latest 2010 version. make sense?

its the hardware version youre interested, chrome dials mean nothing an 06 plates satnav can have the dials granted they are modded in

higher res screen, faster route calculation, ability to read 32GB SD cards, compatibility with latest AMI which allows tracks and artists to be shown from your iPod. i'm sure there are more but those were the important ones to me

so really overall there isnt really much difference between a mk1 and a mk2? the main features i want is sat nav, bluetooth, cd, customizing, etc.???

if youre not interested in the ipod support then get a mk1 save yourself some cash

Not alot of difference, higher res is amazing tbh, so much clearer its unreal, the ami is pretty damn good once you buy that bit of kit of course & the route calculation is fair bit faster, personally I'd say that was a fair bit difference.

Customizing, can you elaborate on that comment please mate?

hmm but the mk1 is still good quality right? i mean by setting the rns up in your profile ie. name, music, sound etc.

Yes the mk1 is still very good indeed, but mk2 is better. :)

When you say profile, care to further elaborate your understanding of the way the unit works.

well its sorted ive ordered the double din kit from vw tps liverpool (£130) and im gonna order a rns with chrome dials tomorrow :) and my friend is gonna code it all in with vag as he is a vw/adu specialist :) happy days
NHN i meant is it able to create a profile or sumet to suit your driving style like phone name when set up, voice levels, music bass and treble levels etc. so the media is set up to the drivers requirements :)
