Hoping someone can give me a clue...

I have got a 2004 A3 2.0 TDI and am getting a strange, high pitched squeal from what sounds like the turbo, the noise only occurs at low revs (i.e. about 1500-1800) and only on flat ground i.e. if I apply more pressure to the throttle the noise shuts up pretty much instantly or if I am going up hill and the engine is having to work a bit harder the noise does not occur. Also, the noise doesnt kick in until about 20 mins after starting from cold.

Someone told me that it may be the 'veins' or 'valves' in the turbo that are clogged up and are sticking at low pressure which kind of makes sense as like I say when you apply more pressure to the throttle the noise disappears. The perfomance of the car doesn't seem to be affected as the car pulls well in all circs.

I suspect (but hope not) the turbo may need replacing, but if anyone has experienced the same or has any suggestions as to what the problem might be I would appreciate your input.

cheers

Have the same squeal! I asked a while ago on here didnt get to the bottom of it but the car seems to be ok and still going. And as you said doesnt effect the performance.

What so hard to understand? If it is to complicated for you to understand that then there is no need for you to comment is there.

I think what he's saying is pretty easy to fathom. From experience sticking VANES in variable nozzle turbos (VNTs) dont' cause a squeaking noise, but they more commonly cause limp mode problems as they usually overboost when they stick in the open postion.

The vanes do not really move that far so its unlikely they are causing a squeaking noise, this could be from worn bearings in the turbo- if the noise is actually from here. This could cause a high pitched squeal under low load like you have described- engine oil pressure is reduced in these conditions, combined with a worn bearing this allows the shaft to move which can cause the turbine/impeller to rub against the housing.

On this site we speak English or an assemblence of, not text speak or similar. If the OP wants a reply he should endeavour to use the whole keyboard.

Also i will continue to post wherever i like as long as my comment is valid, which it is !

xnox202 & akash_sky1...thanks for your input, its much appreciated;

I took the car to a friends garage recently and he actually mentioned the possibility of a worn bearing and movement in the shaft being the cause of the noise. Im taking the car in again so he can have a thorough inspection and see if he can pin point the problem, but I fear for the worst - a new turbo. Not sure how much a new one is from Audi I will have to look into it, there is always the reconditioned turbo option but I have been advised that they dont always last too long. Thanks for your input anyway.

Byzan A4 - Im not quite sure whats going on here or whether I am missing something as I have looked at my original post and there doesnt seem to be too much wrong by way of grammar, spelling or punctuation, (other than an 'r' missing from performance) but im no English Teacher!

My A6 had the same noise and the same instances. Ended up going through 3! In each case it was the bearing in the turbo so needed replacing. Cleaning wouldn't sort this out. When they fit another check the oil feeder pipe is also changed as it can block.

Are you an English teach or SUMMAT ? How the hell is his post so hard to understand, there are no uses of 'text' speak, only two abbrevations , which you must be pretty slow to not understand.

Sarah's A3...thanks for the input, I will get them to check the oil feeder pipe, did you use reconditioned turbo's each time?

akash_sky1...Ive only owned the car for a couple of months but looking through the service history it would appear to be on the variable service intervals with some pretty inconsistent timings of the services i.e. some with a 10k gap in between but one had a 25k gap! I guess low oil levels or poor quality oil could of damaged the turbo which may be the cause of the problem. Going back to what you said earlier about the turbine/impeller rubbing against the housing - the high pitched noise im getting does sound as though its a metal on metal type of squeal so it does seem to point towards the shaft bearings, if this is the case I cant see the turbo lasting too much longer so will need to get it sorted quickly as ive been warned that if the turbo goes whilst driving I could damage other components to the extent that a new engine could be needed!!!

Blueie...How long has yours been making the noise for?

Sarah's A3...What happened when they went on your A6? did anything else get damaged?

thanks

if your turbine/impeller disintegrates then all that debris can go into the cylinder and totally fudge everything up. If the noise if from there and you need a new turbo just get a recon turbo and have it hybrided

That sounds nasty, I best get it looked at pronto...ive been told that recon turbos can have bad reliability and its a bit of a lottery as to how long they will last, I will have to look into the costs / guarentees etc...also, hybrided sounds pricey?

The poorly written post to which i replied has already been deleted. If you would like to wind your neck in, i will be careful not to give you any points for attacking me .

PS i am not an english TEACH or summat no, i am a moderator here looking to ensure that the forum is used correctly using the rules and guidelines that you all signed up to when accepting the terms and conditions.

Right lets get back on topic now.

I would test the boost lines for a boost leak before condeming the turbo

Haha, this is pretty funny really, didnt expect my query to cause such a stir!

Byzan A4 - thnx 4 da reply, cud a leek in da boost lines.............only joking!!! Thanks for the response, could a leak in the boost lines cause a high-pitched noise? Maybe it could if the air was being forced through a small hole at high pressure so I will check it out - im not well up on terminology but by boost lines, are you referring to the 'air feed pipe' that connects to the turbo or the 'vacuum lines' or both or neither?

thanks

yeah, its like air pushing strough a split pipe maybe. I would at the minimun find someoen that can do a boost leak test. They basicly pressurise the hoses that the turbo would normally pressurise and see if it holds the pressure. If it does it's air tight, if it doesn,t its a leak.

After that it could be the turbo i guess, but if you are still getting good power i can't see how it can be as squel is usualy the time when moving parts touch non moving parts= OUCH

Blueie...How long has yours been making the noise for?

It’s been making the noise for a few months now, I did ask on here and been to see a few mechanics and didn’t get an answer. It’s could be most of the above mentioned, bearings or slit in vacuum pipe. It’s in the workshop at the moment for a few body treats so I am tempted to get the turbo reconditioned while it’s off the road.

Have you had any progress on yours?

P.S Grammar and Spelling has been checked my Mum

I have closed this thread, sorry to the OP but it would have gotten out of hand otherwise.

Try the above things and report back in another thread, thanks
