Hello all

I pick my 52 plate 1.9tdi 130 up on Wednesday and am getting it remapped at pdtuning in the north east, I know all the pro's of getting it done, however are there any cons in doing this? Also the car comes with a 1 year audi warranty, will the remap affect the warranty?

Cheers

Gary

Well once you get it remaped you will be stunned by the transformation but the down side is clutch slip . I have just had the whole lot done inc master cylinder and flywheel, and only 44,000 mile's

like colin said you mite get clutch slip or you mite not, colin i think you had a dodgy clutch dude from previous owner, i had my S4 remapped at GTI by MRC and the difference is massive, it pulls like crazy pwp now and im well happy, now my RS4 brakes will get a proper testing. only down sides to mine is that my turbos are getting massive heat through them so gona take it easy for a few weeks and keep the turbos running cuz cant afford to go K04 jus yet

Hi

I have the same A4 as yourself and have been thinking about a remap, will you keep us updated with how it turns out and your honest thoughts, my clutch has just started slipping now on the odd occasion although its done well considering its covered 181k!

How much is the remap??

Yes mate I'll let ya know how it goes and there's a special deal at the minute so it's half price £199. My cars only got 48k with 1 owner from new, so hopefully the clutch should be fine.

Mine is mapped to 170ish. Clutch was changed about 6 months after but the car did have 78K on. No slip now but have to be very careful in the wet in second on roundabouts as the torque pulls the car out of line whilst turning very easily. Car is quick, but I can't compare to standard as this was all done before I got it and I am working from receipts, so the clutch may have given in anyway.

Just treat your clutch with respect
get the clutch out before giving it any beans
the clutch problems are generally caused be ignorance to the workings of clutches
just like the people who hold there cars on hills with the clutch instead of pulling the park brake on :lazy:

I agree - remapping my 2.5tdi increased the power from 180 to 210 - 220bhp.
An increase of 30 - 40bhp (16 - 20%) isn't going to cause a healthy clutch to slip.
On the other hand, if you mistreat your clutch, whether remapped or not, and you'll get problems.:faint:

exactly what mike and paul said: there's so much torque on TDI's that the lower end of the curve is detuned so muppet don't slip the clutch gently and try to pull off fast+smoothly and fry the clutch... so provided you get the clutch ALL the way out before putting your foot down it'll be fine....

That said: I've seen a brand new "100PS" Golf GTI that ran 105bhp get remapped straight to 150-odd bhp, but it was unusable and as soon as the guy tried to rag, even being careful with the clutch it jsut started slipping.... barber-shop BBQ!

And the pro's again: the 130TDI's have much higher spec clutches, so should handle 150-160 with no ill effects at all and 175-190bhp is possible, but you'll have to be a lot more careful: but all of that is provided the previous owner was decent to the clutch and provided you behave with it too....

And the cons again: those sort of bhp figures means you'll be hitting 300+ lb/ft of torque... so think what a hot-hatch with 300+bhp is like: torque-steer and pretty unusable power in the wet: that's why all the FWD TDI's are <160bhp.... with a 130TDI quattro, I'd say "aim high and be very careful with the clutch".... with a FWD, jsut go for 150-160-odd remap and enjoy the better fuel economy and bit of extra mid-range punch...

I can add to this as far as the FWD is concerned mine is mapped to 170 and you can go stupid in the wet putting power down 3rd gear wheel spin is not unusual at all (throttle only) so you have to again treat them with respect ,
as you should any car in the wet anyway
but that said theres bucket loads of torque with the right map.

i have the a4 2004 1.8T avent how much is a new clutch likly to cost on this? i guess it would be flyweel and all? it cost me £1000 on my vectra c 2.2 sri

Dual mass flywheels will take more of a beating through higher torque transfer..As they are weak to begin with id go easy and avoid future bills of around a grand

I had all three changed only 2 week's ago on my 1.8t and it's not cheap. 44.000 mile's my car has done and i'm a carefull driver (2nd car). Like DGT as all ready stated having a remap will put some strain on part's. The remap bring's the car to life i have started saving for the next stage :yum:

Well I got mine remapped and have to say it's made a big difference, the car is far more responsive especially low rev range and pulls very well, I'm a very happy man.

what did they put the bhp up to mate? and the torque figure? from and to? did they say your turbo would cope ok with the increase?

fyi - I think Chip'N'Spin are still doing their forum rolling road days: £250 inc pre and post RR and remap to whatever you wanna try: I'll dig up the numbers somewhere, but I think the "fast road" remap for the 130PD gets about 155-165.... they have a "race" that will get you 180-190bhp, but given that is all through torque, it's only advisable on a quattro.... and budget for a new clutch very soon, if you're not VERY careful... and moderately soon if you are ;)

It's gone up to 170bhp with 300 ft/lbs torque, I spoke with an Audi technician, off the record, before I got the car done and he said as long as I don't rag the car all over constantly, there shouldn't be any problems and the car should be able to handle the increased power. To be honest I'm not the kind of driver that will thrash the car, most of the time my family is in the car but it's nice to have that extra power on tap for a bit of fun.

Has anybody remapped the 2.5TDi with a multitronic gearbox? I've read that (some of) the problems with the gearbox are caused by the fact that the engine output is just a bit too close to the limit of the 'box... not too interested in the power side, but more the useability and of course any increase in economy is a bonus.

even with the rebuilt 7 plate clutch versions of the multitronic, I'd be careful with that: all multitronic's were non-quattro'd version (detuned to about 163bhp?), but those engines are still capable of about 350lb/ft if so tuned: the TDI130's and even the 1.8T's (<200lb/ft) were breaking those gearboxes, so they have no chance with an agressively tuned 2.5TDI.

if you've not had the gearbox rebuilt (most were done by Audi under warranty), then don't remap at all..
