Poor MPG Tdi 140

Can't figuire out what's wrong, my TDI 140 the past few weeks is struggling to average 34 MPG. The car seems fine it has oil, it pulls hard idles ok etc. To get this im driving realy slow, changing gear at about 1500 Rpm, very slowly accelerating and sitting in 6 th rarley going over 30 MPH.
If i decide to accelerate fast or i drive faster on the country lanes i can average into the twentys.
 
Yes is stupid but if cruise along in 4th or 5th i drop to about 30 MPG. Not checked the diesel filter, might get one tomorrow. I'm thinking of stripping the inlet and EGR to clean it all see if this makes a diffrence.
 
You're gonna knacker your dual mass flywhell doing 30mph in 6th. Don't think it's gonna save you money in the long run mate...
 
I would say your putting the engine under to much strain. Making it use more fuel.
 
Well it uses less than its does in 5th and 4th, didn't know it would damage the DM. Lets hope it does, its gives me an excuse to the misses to start modding. Uprated clutch, gives me an excuse to go for a Hybrid, I'll just tell her that has to be replaced too. :) works everytime.
 
DMF dampens the engine vibrations that are being transferred onto the transmission, lower the revs - more strain on the DMF.

Yep my 140tdi needs to be in the right gear for good performance and economy. Drifted to work around thirty in third/fourth and was returning high thirties mpg.

I reckon you should be worrying less about mpg if you're splashing out on a new clutch fella!
 
when was it last serviced? air filter/ fuel filter?
are you running with air-con switched on?

i drive 8 miles to work on A and B roads averaging 40mph and when i get there engines warmed up nicely and computer says @46mpg
did a 70 mile motorway trip yesterday averaging 70mph and computer said @47mpg
 
mine was crap, it averaged 37 mpg or there abouts, my previous golf was much better. I don't think short trips and diesels are a good combination if i'm honest and the DIS was hopeless it was quoting an average of 44mpg.
 
I rarely go below 50mpg with any style of driving..apart from flooring it! On daily motorway trips to work i usually hit 65mpg easiyl enough.
 
Have you reset your computer? also which computer are you looking at... 1 or 2?
computer 1 will reset if you dont drive for 2 hours but computer 2 will keep the figures until reset...

In my 2.0 TDi 140 i am getting an average of 40mpg in London and 65mpg on the motorways... roughly getting about 650 miles to a full tank.
 
Well i reset both today, done 40 miles and i have averaged 33.4 MPG on 1 and 2, thats i small strech of motoway about 3 miles there and back, and country roads so 40 to 60 MPH. No heavy traffic, stopping and starting etc.
Not sure of the top of my head when it was serviced but its done 46k, the service book was upto date when i got at 40k i think.

I should of got a TFSI, a friend of mine gets the same MPG in his golf MK5 Gti

Start with the basics
-check your tyre pressures
-when servicing is due
you'd be surprised at how much difference it makes
and as already said 6th properly is too higher gear for 30 which could put quite a strain on the engine and therefore increase fuel consumption
 
I have a remapped 140 and only manage 500 to a tank on motorways at 76mph average!!
 
I'll get 600 miles average, 500-550 if I throw in some naughty driving and town driving, over 700/750 if it's all motorway work.

Anthony - Such crappy figures are making me wonder if you have a binding caliper or two possibly, or do you accidentally leave your tailgate open when driving? ;)
 
P.S. This may lift your spirits a little - I came across this video on YouTube today...an American setting out on an economy challenge. He wants to cover 550 miles on one tank of fuel in a TDI A3. Aircon off, tyres up to 50psi etc. How odd!

About two weeks back the price of fuel leveled out to about the same in all the three local petro stations , so i started using BP my nearest station. So out of curiosty ive ran this lot of fuel untill empty. Yesterday i filled up with the normal shell extra. Ive done 60 miles today and had some B road fun and now im averaging 40.1 MPG, maybe it was the fuel. I ive seem maybe 1 or 2 MPG diffrence before in petrol, but never 6 MPG, has anyone else done this before.
 
I agree with the fuel thoughts, also the air filter, its makes a big difference if the car is allowed to breath easier.

Like the guys have said it can be the tyres or anything like that, i think the biggest problem is driving style, on my BMW the biggest fuel loss is through being in too high a gear even more so than booting it! i have 140 on order but my current petrol 320i returns a solid 39.7mpg over 10k, motorway's its 45-50mpg and thats in a petrol.

If it was me i would do your trips out with the actual MPG display on, that way you can gauge where any bad habbit's may be, failing that there is something very wrong with the car.
 
Well ive ran about 30 miles today and returing around 40 mpg, dropped to 37 while having a bit of fun on the bendy bits. Looking like it was fuel because i have not changed a single thing other than that.
 
that is much better but to be honest i worry if the MPG shows less than 43 on mine, im so used to seeing it at 50mpg.
but nonetheless it is progress...
 
Yeah, i think the turbo is nearly dead also. Its getting louder by the day and whistling and siren noise is getting realy noticeable. Its going to get a full service soon, just need to find a new job before i can spend anymore money.

Unless you have enlarged your tank it's not easy to get 750miles from one tankfull. It is possible of course but not what I would describe as "easy" or a regular occurance I bet! Even using ever lasst drop it would require an average of 63mpg on the whole tank, but assuming that's not realistic, there's about 50litres or so to us it'd be 68mpg average over the whole 750miles. Quite a task IMO!

Averaging 55mpg is around 630miles to a tank which is what I would say is easier to achieve on longer journies at steadyish pace. But the jump to get 750miles must require loads more effort!?
 
WOW. You guys get some serious miles. I get about 500 with the economy map on, with average driving from me. Get about 550 if I run standard map though. To be honest, when I drive there is ABSOLUTELY no thought about fuel economy though. Do a lot of B road driving, so a fair chunk of overtaking, driving a wee bit naughty. But there is usually a couple hundred miles per tank on motorways, sitting on cruise about 78 mph.

Don't have DIS on my poverty spec SE though, so no computer figures, but I think I probably average between 45-48 mpg per tank??? Also, that is usually from full to just after the warning comes on (maybe 10-15 miles).

short journeys and driving like its stolen :ninja:
 
Still good figuires, even at 400 miles a tank realy. Id be lucky to get 250 miles from 50 litres in my old cooper S, i could empty a tank in my impreza in 90 miles of pure abuse and get about 180-190 miles a tank being nice.
 
I managed to get my 2.0 FSI up to 46.7mpg the other day, partially due to average speed cameras on the M80 forcing everyone to drive at 40mph LOL
 
I get 430-450miles from a full tank to when the light comes on on the dash. Mainly town driving. I'd probably squeeze 500miles if I had more control over my right foot. :)

Can't imagine seeing 650-700 though.
 
Glad I found this, was looking about for some mpg figures for London 140tdi drivers and came across the thread. Seems most get the same as me with a bit of spirited driving :) 400 a tank sounds about right, but I get 380 -390 if being really heavy with the right foot, plus traffic in London at most times of the day severely hamper good mpg figures.

To those of you on constant 50+ mpg you must live in a ghost town and drive at night only, lol. I can only get that in London by going on an 'A' road very late with Miss Daisy riding shotgun
 
i tried so hard to get 500 miles but the foot just seems to get heavy and 400 it is
plus im not ready to put my straw hat on the parcel shelf just yet lol
 
Those of us getting over 700 miles to the tank do so by doing long stints without stopping, or changing our speed. I only have a five mile drive to the motorway, and since I'm originally from the North, it's a 300 mile drive home, or 210 to Manchester. I remember having 600mi showing on my DIS (fuel remaining) and 60.0mpg average as I passed Manchester on my way up North one time! LOL. With town and fun-road driving thrown in, I usually get 525 miles, give or take 20 miles odd. If I had to do city driving it would undoubtedly be more like the 400 miles you guys are getting.
 
I did see the range go up to 700miles after already having done about 50miles in my 140 going through long 50mph road works on the M1, but of course the range is constantly being calculated so if you up the speed or change to a-roads you can see 100miles wiped off that in a matter of miles.

I would say 6th gear is best 55mph or higher. 50 at a min, but any less and it will load the engine to much
 
My "600mi" indication was after 210 miles :) Unfortunately I had to do about 60 miles of driving on my fun roads back home, so after the 300 mile drive back I only just made 700 miles on that tank. All this is pre-remap.
 
I drive 115 miles a day commuting to work and I need to fill up every weekend. I usually end up with about 600 miles each tank, and there is always a bit left.

I don't rag my car around and spend 90 odd miles each day on the M25, and through the roadworks (50mph limit) the computer can go mad and read 800 mile range if I have just filled up. I'm no saint though, and just drive normally. I get my fuel paid for so I really don't care what mpg I get, but it's still nice to get 600 miles from a tank.

Looking at my urban journey though, I can drop to 30-35mpg easily on the 10 mile stretch that I do, so clearly there is a massive difference. This is why diesel is only really better if you are maxing out the miles. In stop start traffic I doubt there is much difference between diesel and petrol.
