I have a rattle which I think is coming from 1 of the pulleys on my V belt. How can I check which one it is??

take the v belt off and run it without it. This will rule out the driven items. Possible the alternator pulley is seized, you should feel it slip when quickly turning by hand. More than likely the noise is from the balance shaft. The BLB has a chain driven drive abd is common for failure
the BRE had the spur gear if your BLB has it then its be modified. Try removing the belt then, its a quick test and will rule out most things
If you give your VIN to the dealer or someone with ETKA then they can tell you if it has the old-style, problematic chain drive.

I have been told that after a certain chassis number BLB engines were fitted with modified spur gear. How do I take off belt??
saying that theres still problems with the spur gear drive so dont rule it out just cause its not a chain
the tensioner has a 16mm bolt on it. A long reach spanner will access it and turn it clockwise to take the tension off. Take note of the route of the belt

You need to lock the alternator internals before trying to turn the pulley, it should turn both ways but may be a little stiff. I think you will find it will be that one seized.
The fan blades in my alternator turn one way and not the other so i assume this pulley is ok. When engine is running the tensioner seems to move side to side on its spring. Is this likely to be my noise. If so are they easy to replace??

Just come back from local indie and they think either alternator pulley or air con clutch as switching on and off air con makes rattle more noticable. How can I check which one it is. They told me to let it develop and go back in a few month.

The easiest test without taking anything off is to start the engine and turn the steering lock to lock, listen and feel for the steering pump juddering/squealing/ making noise. That will indicate the alternator pulley. Mine got noisier when the aircon was turned on and off. If you are handy with a spanner it's not a bad job, you just need the proper tool.
Thats lazy fot he garage, a few mins popping a belt or two off would have proved it there and then.
Mine has a noisey aircon pump and clutch in that it maks one noise when aircon off, and a different sound when it's on on. When i drop the belt it's quieter than a silent thing in a quiet place

I did it with the alternator in place, which on a golf required removal of the bumper, headlight and washer bottle (which was a pain in the hole!!).
If you take the alternator off it won't be too bad. You need a special pulley tool, laser tools make them for about £15.
Search it on google, you will find plenty of guides.
Mentioned this on aonther thred recently,I have what seem's to be the same problem,iregular rattley clattery sound which is getting gradualy worse with the air con selected 'off',it's almost elimnated with aicon selected 'ON'.tried turning steering lock to lock as mentinoed here on an eralier thred as a dignostic for the alternator pulley but no judder squelling no stranges noises in fact it elliminated the rattle for over a minute or so then it gradualy came back, just wondered if any one had proven it to be the alternater pulley, alternator is not siezed belt tention and all pulley's look fine with engine running,don't want to pay out for an A/C pump and find it's not,
