Engine Management Light and Misfire - 2004 1.8T

Alright chaps - been away for a while enjoying the Quattro when this morning I hit some niggles.

Accelerating away from behind a turning car I noticed a light flash on the dash and some judder - at first I thought why the hell is the Traction Control kicking in, but when it did it again I realised it wasn't the TCS light.

So, I'm getting a flashing CEL and misfire so I'm assuming that this is a Coil Pack on the way out/gone.

Question is - if I decide to do this myself, can anyone confirm what part I need, and how the hell do you work out which Coil is screwed without VAGcom? Is it a case of swapping/driving/waiting for misfire?

most likey is a coil pack, the way to check is un plug one at a time and start the car if there is no change plug it back in, and unplug the next one and so on until it makes get wose it will be that one, if you go to gsf and give you reg number they will give you the right pack
 
Nice one, thanks mate. It must only just be starting as I'm not getting idling issues at the mo, only under acceleration.

I expect it'll deteriorate!

Is it worth getting it VagCom scanned first in case this isn't the issue?
 
if you get it scaned for beer money then get it sacned, pack 1 is at the front the 23 and 4 is the one closet to the drivers seat,
it will be you pack as i had 3 go on me and had the same symptoms, get a spare and keep it in the car
 
Thanks mate - Looks like the coil is £25 sheets from GSF so its probably worth getting a couple then trial end error.


If it still happens I can get it scanned then and I've still got spares for when the eventuality comes!

The above is incorrect: If a coil pack has failed you will be running on 3 cylinders so the car will be missfiring, by unplugging the bad coil pack you will still be running on 3 cylinders so there will be no change in how the car runs, if you unplug a working coil pack the car will be running on only 2 cylinders so will run a lot rougher.

To test unplug 1 coil pack at a time, if there is no change in how it runs that coilpack is shot. If it runs worse that coil pack is fine.

Thats excellent advice - thanks mate.

Just heard back from the local Audi Independent - they say its a false economy to do one - better doing them all and then its out of the way, then carry the non faulty ones as spares.

They want £200 quid to scan, replace all four of the coil packs then rescan after.

Is it worth going with the Indy or am I better of doing this myself and replacing them one at a time?
 
They want £200 quid to scan, :scared2:

For that much you could buy vagcom and scan it youself, a scan should not be more that £20-30,
no point changing a part that has noting wroing with, i think there are taking you for ride:asskicking:

No, they want £46 including vat to scan before and after, then £154 including vat to replace all four of the coil packs, so around £40 per coil including labour. I didn't think that was that bad actually?!

But I still think its easier to have a go myself for £25.
 
sorry £200 for a scan was excessive
do it youself, i was never hands on until i changed one, now am doing litte jobs and saving £££££

Ordered a couple from GSF - £56 quid delivered so I'll give it a go when they arrive.

Should I be lifting these all the way out to test, or unplugging the clip from the side? Also do I do this with engine running constantly or by stopping/starting each time I check one?

Just driven home very steadily - couple of judders and lights.

Sat with the engine running a while and no misfires though - also revved and no missfires.

Out of interest if I'm not running rough at idle, how do I tell if I've got the right coil?
 
rev the car, and if it dose not miss fire take out for a drive, but dont drive it to much or you will damage your cat with the unburn fule
 
i got a cable of ebay £20 and i use the trail vagcom to scan my car, it not the best it dose the job for reading fault codes, saving up for a proper cable and software, ebay cable are hit and miss and there was alot of messing about with drivers and port setting,

Yeah, thats what worries me really but I can't really see an option without a VAGCOM scan.

Shame its not idling lumpy. I can provoke it though so shouldn't have to go far before I know if its still doing it.
 
For what it's worth I would change all 4, I had an intermittent miss fire with a coil pack, with 1 changed it ran ok but with 4 changed it picked up power and mpg.

That would be really really kind of you mate, like I say just worry about damaging the cat.

I've got a decent straight run of road about 2 miles from where I live, so I'm going to take my coils down there and try and get it sorted in a bit. I'll let you know how I get on, but if I haven't managed to sort it I'd be grateful for a scan of the fault codes!
