Hi there,
basically when im driving the car seems to make an ongoing noise when the accelerator is not being pressed, when i put my foot on the accelerator there is no noise, but when i take it off there is noise which does not seem to go away, someone was telling me its the clutch but im not too sure?
any help??

Thanks in advance

Define the noise - mechanical/metallic/resonating/grating/sounds more from the front/rear/have I run over a cat

Yeh mate, the noise is coming from the front of the car I think it comes from the left hand side not 100% sure on that though, erm it sounds like a grinding noise hope that helps I will try and make a video or sound clip to show the sound. But hope the above info helps. Thanks

I think I've got the same problem, mines a whining noise and the higher the revs the higher the pitch of the whine. Does yours stop when you put your foot on the clutch? or just when you press the accelerator? I was thinking it's either the gearbox low on oil (which I'll check once I know what oil to get) or thrush bearings.

Has anyone else had this or got any ideas?

Cheers
Carl

Could be all matter of things to be honest.

Brakes
CV boot
Track rod

To name just a few that spring to mind.

Transmission and clutch are front left?

You say it makes a noise when the accelator is not being pressed and stops when you accelerate?

Accelerator not pressed --- So does it only makes a noise when holding a stready speed? Does it make a noise when you take your foot off the accelerator and let the car deaccelerate?

As long as it's in gear and moving then mine always makes a noise, the only times it doesn't make a noise is when I put my foot on the clutch or the accelerator, if I take the car out of gear as I'm driving the noise stops so I don't think it brakes or wheel bearings etc... I've just ordered some gearbox oil (as it's done 135k now) from Opie Oils so I'll change the oil at the weekend and see if that helps.

yeh the noise gets louder when decelerating from a higher rev, but when i put the clutch down their is no noise. Dont know what the problem is

Hi all, ive got an a3 quattro and it does this aswell, its more of a whining noise than a grind only when decelerating, when i put my foot on the accelerator (even a little touch of the accelerator) it goes away. I havent been all that concerned about it before, just put it down to a normal noise.

I agree, the possibilities are endless with this.

From descriptions, it sounds transmission related though, especially with the clutch being directly related to it.

Thrust bearing a possibility, but also dual mass flywheel could be a suspect.

well its not the brakes, ive just had the pads changed and the noise is still occuring, but my clutch needs changing soon so im hoping this is the problem and nothing more serious.

an a3 which i changed the clutch and flywheel on recently was only making noises off throttle, this was due to a failed dmf
