Hi All

Im Ben, 22 from Shrewsbury and ive joined because im looking at getting an S3 (around 2000)

Ive had a few cars mainly peugeot (think ive had 8 now) best one being my 306 GTI-6.

I moved away from peugeot and bought an Astra GSI Turbo as i wanted something a bit faster, better equipped and newer than my GTI - 6 but it didnt really live up to my expectations.

Im off to see an S3 at the weekend with a view to buying it so if anyones got any tips or what have you let me know

Cheers,

Ben

Hi Ben, hope the viewing goes well. Welcome!

Best wishes

Chris

Fair bit to look for then!

The one im off to see is a 1999 with 64K on it, its got Audi History for the first 4 years then independant after that. The lady i spoke to about it has had it the last 6 years and its only been used at weekends.

Its bog standard and is black with the blue interior.

The main concern for me is that it is yet to have a cambelt (her garage have advised her its not due until 80K apparently) however im concerned due to the age of it so have managed to get her to adjust her price accordingly.

Anyone got an Idea of cambelt replacement cost? I imagine about £300 which is what shes agreed to drop from her asking price? On the Audi website it says they do one for £329 but i was unsure if the S3 was covered in this.

Cheers, Ben

yeah, i saw the price on the audi website too, i think mine cost a bit more than that, but if you can get it knocked off the price of the car then theres nothing to worry about. You are right to get it done sooner than the 80K. 80K is the old audi cam belt service schedule i think, but then audi revised this due to a number of cam belt failures, its now every 60K or 5 years. So on a '99 plate car it is obviously overdue ~5 yrs.

either way, better safe than sorry, so if yuo do buy it, get the belt done ASAP

I'm very cautious when it comes to cambelts as peugeots are the same, they recommend every 72K but specialists reccomend every 36K, the one on mine failed 2 months after id sold it having only covered 20K

I think i may take the hit and take it to Audi, at least i can guarentee its genuine parts then and i dont know of a specialist round me. Is the waterpump driven by the cambelt in an S3?

yes i think so, make sure they do this at the same time, im sure they will, but also ask for the belt tensioner and damper to be done at the same time because these can also fail and will have the same side effects as a broken cam belt

Thanks i hope so too! I've not driven one yet so hopefully it wont be a dissapointment. Im not expecting it to be as exciting to drive as a GTI-6 but im hoping it will be an improvement on the astra!

Midland VW have quoted me £340 for a cambelt (inc tensioner, water pump and coolant) and a haldex service (oil and filter)

Does this sound resonable?
