Can Bus Question from vcds new boy

Hi, I would like to connect to vcds to look at a fault. ( Air bag ). My mate has vcds but lives miles away and we are unsure of whether his will work on my car.

My car is a 2004 S4 Cabriolet.

His vcds/lead will work on his car which apparently is can bus from module to module but not can bus from the diagnostic port to the modules.

Will this work on my system and is it can bus from the diagnostic socket to and between the modules.

Hope this makes sense as I know nothing about vcds.

NHN, I know a bit more about it now as he did a scan for me today. Its a Ross Tech KEY-USB Dual K.

It communicated with most of the modules but there were a couple that it didn't. Have a list of fault codes now to try and sort out. I'm searching through the forums to find answers but if i cant find what i need, is the best place to post on this forum or back on the B6 one.

The KEY-USB should work fine with '04 S4.

Concerning the modules that it did not communicate with: are you sure they are installed in your car? When VCDS does a full scan, it scans for all possible modules - not necessarily the modules installed in your car.

We could help you further if you would post a full autoscan from the car.

Yes, that seems to be intermittent though so not overly concerned about it at the moment but will prob get worse and then it'll need looking at.

Can anyone tell from the scan if it is communicating with all modules I have in the car or do you have to know the full option list, ie sat nav etc.

looks pretty much the full installed units to me. What ones are you concerned about that are not listed?

Its just that when my mate did the first scan he wasn't sure if his lead would be fully compatible and the he commented that it might not be talking to a particular module, cant remember what one but now i am a bit more familiar with vcds, I agree with you and it is all communicating fine.
I scanned again yesterday and got some faults up on a couple of modules that I had previously cleared. I fitted a Smartop roof module a couple of weeks ago and was wondering if they could be to do with that. Any ideas or shoud I post another thread.
