Clearing codes

hi, i am a fairly new owner /user of vag-com, so at the risk of sounding silly, here goes!
how do you clear your fault codes, is it just as simple as pressing the button, 'clear codes'?
its just that after hitting this button, all the codes are still there without having even started the car up let alone driving it!

Yes, all you need to do is clear the codes in the controller. Now, if they immediately reappear, then you have a real problem in the car. The controller is setting them immediately again. That means nothing has been fixed and so the fault cannot be cleared. Not all faults require the engine to run.
