A4 ECU unable to read faults.

Tried to read fault codes on a mates A4 today. After multiple attempts to read it, I managed to clear the stored faults. Then I started it up and wanted to look at the airflow through the MAF but it wouldn't connect to the ECU.

I rebooted the laptop and tried all sorts. It would happily connect to the ABS ECU on command.

Anyone have any ideas for me? I have read about pulling the fuse for the instruments being a cure but that seems a bit daft to me.

What year A4? What engine? What type of VC lead? What version of VC? I see you were able to connect with the ABS, but what about all the other systems in the car?
