i always thought my engine was a bit tappy but put it down to high milage. Anyway i bought a cheap vagcom and cable so i could reset my engine management light after a coilpack failure and as i checked the fault codes in the engine section of vagcom the tappety noise just disappeared and now the engine purrs.

Any ideas what was causing it in the first place.........i am well chuffed.

Cheers

What type of engine?

When you clear fault codes, your ECU also resets a number of "learned" parameters, such as fuel trim. But unless you fix whatever is causing those parameters to diverge from nominal to begin with, it will relearn them again after some driving.

Hi mate,

It is the 1.8t 2002. Is it the 8E type?????

It was when i cleared the fault codes and after i have done a few miles it still seems ok.

I guess i should check for fault codes again and see if anything shows up.

You may want to use VAG-COM > Select > 01 - Engine > Fault Codes - 02 > Copy/Save Codes and post 'em here, even if there are no fault codes stored. This will give us some additional information which may be useful...
