Personally I would always go for a proper Ross-Tech cable to ensure that you can use the latest version of Vag-Com.
That cable will only work with non-CANBUS based cars so for example no good for an 8P A3.

Thanks for the reply - yep, am tempted to go ahead and get the cable above ( I have 8L A3). Sounds far less hassle.
Hopefully no probs importig from US.

You will need to pay VAT on it and watch out as some of the importers try and charge you handling fees etc. No problem with the VAT but I get miffed with the extra charges that they sometimes try on.
Very good service from Ross-Tech all of my cables (various versions) have come direct from them.
They do have an upgrade path, but to be honest personally I would go with a combination CANBUS cable if there is any likely hood that you will upgrade to a newer Audi at anypoint.
