Help with Fault Code

Have got a problem with my 1996 A4. The car will start but then cuts out with the immobilser light flashing on the dash. Hooked up VAG-COM and got the following fault from the immobiliser module. Anyone able to shed some light on this before I resort to the stealers?

01177 - Engine Control Unit
65-10 - unauthorized - Intermittent
