Hi guys after some help had to call the rac out as my a3 1.8t wouldn't start been temperamental last few weeks cutting out crap idle revs,

rac put there computer on and up popped 14 fault codes the guy was baffled along with the audi technician he also rung who suggested down the phone to set fire to it!
The codes I have as follows
18010 battery voltage to ECM to low
575 camshaft position sensor
16500 coolant temp sensor
532 supply voltage b+
16885 vehicle speed signal implausible signal
1165 throttle body control module
17967 idle switch on buse setting
1249 1250 1251 1252 there cylinders 1 to 4
1247 no info as rac man ran out of room
1262 same as above
2224 same as above
Any help would be greatly appreciated
codes were reset and came back when engine was cranked over

Where are you located? What year is the car?

That's allot of errors which leads me to believe its a power feed issue, battery or alternator maybe?

Battery still cranks over and the lights are all ok it was suggested I put it on a diagnostics machine

Yes that would be a good start.

I live in bodmin this may sound stupid but what will thevcd thing do that rac computer didn't I'm not car knowledgable like that

Thanks very much for the offer have got a guy coming Monday with a machine if u was any closer I'd of taken up your offer, I am not to confident after tha rac man saying its like looking for a needle in haystack! I have read in quite a few places it may just be the crankshaft sensor I dunno I'm no mechanic at times like this I wish I was though

Had the car looked at today with a vcds and the guy reckons maybe the ecu so I am needing to get the ecu tested any suggestions on best place to send it also would I be able to put a different ecu in?

You can fit another ecu yes, but you need to either buy one with an immobiliser delete, or have somebody read your security codes and adapt the new ecu with VCDS to your car. Very straightforward job, I did one on a mk4 golf a week ago when he fitted a new turbo conversion to a non turbo!

Do you have the log from VCDS, im sure others on here will be able to advise you better before removing the ecu.

I second this notion... The ECU is expensive. Most often there are other problems that may be at the root of your problems and fitting a new ECU may not be the solution. It is probably the most expensive solution! Post the autoscan and get opinions from others before spending on a new ECU.

For example, the low voltage faults - did you have a low battery? replaced or re-charged it recently? Those faults can be ignored if that is the case.

The sensor faults however could be an ECU or it could be wiring. Many of the sensors share a common signal from the ECU that is a reference to the sensors. Could that signal from the ECU have failed? Is it wiring? is one of the sensor shorted and pulling that signal to ground? If a short exists, would it damage a new ECU?

Don't shot gun this repair. Do your homework. Go to erWin and get the wiring diagrams and get your meter out. Spend the time to make sure you know what the failure was and fix it right.

Hi guys I have purchased a crank sensor and am going to try that any ideas on where it is located? I am waiting for the guy who read the code to tx me the numbers

Thankyou I think I have found the problem the round thing below the battery there is a sensor and I think it was already knackered been bodged once before has broken both wires I have now got the task of changing it

Do you have a photo of it ?

This is behind the starter motor on the gearbox and its broke an I clutching at straws thinking this could be my problem

Not sure what is but it could be a road speed sensor or reverse light switch both guesses though.

I was thinking the same, I can't see that stopping the car running though can you?

looked back at your faults and road speed sensor is listed so I think that's it however I would suspect a non start could be due to your camshaft sensor or could it be your timing that's out ? Hard to say could even be a bad battery I think a good vcds session would help though

Well I am picking up the part shortly so fingers crossed, I have a new crank sensor also which I am going to try as well
