How to use VCDS

I've got a genuine ross tech vcds cable, ive got the software installed and i can do a basic scan but ive no idea how to use it all properly, i.e program things, how to get live readings etc, and guides anywhere so i can use the full potential of this software?

Measuring blocks in each module to get live readings, coding and adaption to get into programming things. What car do you have and what did you have In mind?
 
Thanks, I need to code my rnse mk2 and I'll be doing cruise soon and maybe xenons, but when I go to code it says error 13 or something, are the certain things you need to do to code? Also want to get some readings to check wether everything on my car is running right I.e timing, injectors, maf etc, are there any figures that are correct to compare them to? I have a 2004 a3 2.0 tdi manual and a 2005 a3 2.0 tdi DSG
 
always wise to have ignition on and all the doors unlocked as some modules cannot be read otherwise
