Reading error codes on Audi 8P 2003

Hi

Iv had a quick search and theres tons and tons of data how to do this with a VCDS adapter, but I don't want to spent over £200 just to see why the engine management light is on.

I have a Audi 8P 2003 and would like to know if any of those cheapo cables on ebay will do the job?
And can you clear the codes with the free software (if I can fix this issue that is!)

An Audi A3 8P requires a CAN style interface. The cheap versions of these are pirated from Ross-Tech. Our free software, VCDS-Lite is not compatible with the CAN style interfaces as it was designed for the older style KKL interfaces.
