Vag Com Not Working At All

Hi there, i baught a vag com cable off ebay around about a year ago, i tried to clear a fault about a month ago but no interface could be found, i took it to a mechanic today but was still having the same problem using the garage equipment :S any ideas?

plug lead to laptop and car start laptop then cag com program ..might work

Check fuses 1st, gateway module could be defective aswell.
