Ebay Vagcom doesn't work with 8P A3/S3's

Bought this VAG COM USB DIAGNOSTIC CABLE 409.1 OBD2 II LEAD VAG-COM on eBay (end time 25-Oct-10 14:00:32 BST) a while ago mainly for my car but have a friend with an 8P S3 and tried doing an auto scan earlier and it didn't work. It was trying a number of address', got to about 80 then I got bored.
Why doesn't it work with the 8P's and what does?

Probably because the A3 8P is CAN based diags and the lead you have is K line for older cars like the A3 8L chassis.

It actually states most cars upto 2004 and the 8P came out in 2004

You need a diag lead that supports CAN & K-line to cover all models, like a genuine ross-tech lead. I think they also have a micro CAN lead specifically for CAN only based cars I think.

Ah I see, thanks Craig. Think I might just splash out on the propper kit from ross-tech.

You need a diag lead that supports CAN & K-line to cover all models, like a genuine ross-tech lead. I think they also have a micro CAN lead specifically for CAN only based cars I think.

The MicroCAN will work with the 8P A3 but it will not work with most other CAN based Audis. If you want to work on other Audis, you should consider the HEX+CAN style interfaces. Our distributors in the UK handle these interfaces including NHN here on this forum.

it even stated 'NOT' compatible with a3 8p ! get the hex-can well worth it !
