Sort of on-topic, sort-of off-topic... But this occurred to me the other day actually...
As a really budget way of getting some more power out of my 1.9TDI - and without going down the road of hit-and-miss tuning boxes or more expensive remaps (as I'm not so thirsty for more power to justify spending £350-£500 on my current car); might it be possible for me to find an ECU (from a breakers or whatever) that would deliver higher-output than my current one, but be otherwise compatible enough for me to swap it over?
I know it's a bit of a left-of-field way of going about it, but I was just pondering how possible it might be when I was chatting to a mate of mine about doing similar things to his old Rolf and this thread reminded me of it all...
Regards,
Rob.

A4 B5 1.8TQS Avant - Lightened fuel tank, two fantastic wheel bearings - two more an unknown quantity, boot full of lenses.
surley a remaps no more than 500?
revo maps for gti golfs aint that expensive
Well yeah, but I was just thinking that given tricks we've done with his Rolfs (sticking a different ECU on to bleed some more power out of it), perhaps there's the opportunity to do something similar to my car...
If it came down to spending £500, I'm not too fussed about increasing the power... I'm not particularly unhappy with it, I've better things to spend £500 on at the moment, and I'll be picking up a nice new company car in the next few weeks...
If it's possible to give it an extra 20 horses by pulling an ECU off a scrapper and installing it in my motor for a few quid though...
Regards,
Rob.

Ok, but what about a motor with more mature milage on it? Like mine has 128k, 5 years old?Originally Posted by dunk
No you couldn't just use an ecu off a higher output model as all the hardware is different ie turbo, MAF, injectors and the scaling wouldn't equate. If it's expensive I believe there's a nice little group buy going on over at evvo.co.uk the sister beetle forum to as.netOriginally Posted by FactionOne
