An external waste does the same job as an internal one, just in a different way.
External wastegates a usually preferred for high boost applications.
You have better control over boost levels.
Internals tend to open differently and at an angle. They can allow boost leaks "creap" at full boost due to the nature of their design. The also can effect the flow of the exhaust gasses as they dump into the echaust side of the turbo which can effect flow. Manufacturers use internals alot as they are easier to fit in tight engine bays etc, and less parts in total.
For larger stuff, external is the way to go.
