Replacing the Diverter Valve

I just changed the diverter valve on my 99 A3 1.8T. For anyone planning the same job and has little knowledge of the engine layout, I have enclosed a few pics for reference. A 15 minute job for a 2 spanner mechanic.

Hardest part was removing the clip on top of the valve. Obtaining a new clip before you start may be an advantage but I managed to utilise the old one.

Hope this is of help to someone.

Mine was an original valve on 47000 miles and was knackered. A fluttering noise between gear changes at low speeds is a tell tale sign. Definately better throttle response with the new one.

Cost 22.87 from my local Audi Dealer.

My 1.8T 1999 makes this kind of "fluttering" noise e.g if you accelarate in 2nd get beyond 2000rpm and lift off the accelarator you get a sorta whoosh...flutter.... I thought this is the sound it naturally makes? The car seems to accelarate as I would expect, no loss of power?

its below the airbox at the front of the car... If you trace the inlet from airbox to turbo, you will find it. Its a PITA to get to on the A4!

Thanks - I'll look a bit harder this weekend.

I think I was confused as all I could find is a black disk coming off the inlet, similar to a DV but with no thin hose at the top.
May be confused from looking at forge 007 etc.

Best bet is to get it up on a ramp, remove the undertray and there it is! Did mine over the weekend. Would be a 20 min job at a friendly garage.

Blimey - well hidden - the only way of accessing it has to be from underneath.
Local garage is a friend of mine, so I'll get it up on the ramp soon...

if you are going to do it, better stumping up 50 more and getting a forge valve.
the bosch one are notorious for failure even after low miles.
poor quality plastic item that takes a bit of a pounding at every gear change and lift off.

better items out there without the "chav'd up impreza" soundtrack that feel much crisper

Re: Replacing the Diverter Valve

Does anyone know where this darned thing is on a 2.5 TDi A6 AKN engine? Cant find it anywhere.... when accelerating, I can hear an air 'hiss' between 1800rpm and bout 2500rpm then the engine noise drowns out the hiss. I'm thinking that its worn and as the boost is building up i think the valve is opening under the pressure slightly. Also, DV is making the fluttering noise every now and again.

i believe that these parts are not that expensive from audi?

Cheers,

Dan

Not sure if the diesels have Diverters or not???

In the good old days, before them the fluttering noise was the wastegate chattering shut and back open.

Re: Replacing the Diverter Valve

I thought wastegates released the pressure into the atmosphere?

Cos the sound is coming from the air fliter, so pressuming the DV is going its job and releasing the air back into the air intake system, thats why i believe it had a DV on it.

Re: Replacing the Diverter Valve

No the wastegate controls the amount of boost generated - i.e. when closed boost is made, but when open the pressure is released down the exhaust rather than kept in the system. Obviously then there are inbetween stages of how far open the wastgate is.
The diverter valve is in the intake side. As opposed to an atmospheric dump valve - which releases the pressurised air charge into the atmospehere when the throttle is closed (to stop pressure build up and forcing the turbo to stall between gear changes) a Diverter valve opens - but not to atmosphere and re-routes the pressurised air back around the intake side of the turbo to keep the turbo spinning for when you open the throttle again.
Sorry I can't confirm if the TDi's have these or not? It seems likely to me that they would have them, but I don't know.

Diesels do not have DV's as they have no throttle butterfly.

Re: Replacing the Diverter Valve

So is it my wastegate that is putting the air back into the system at the air intkae before the turbo? as the 'wooosh' noise is coming from my air filter??

I thought wastegates dumped the air into the exhaust system? (i originally thought it was into the atmosphere like the dump valve / blow off valves do)

Re: Replacing the Diverter Valve

No the wastegate is just dumping the air down the exhaust, but I expect seeing as you have an induction kit on it, you can just hear all these things that much more.

I had an Escort RS running over 200bhp with a K&N cone filter on it and all aspects of the turbo were very loud, whistling up and especially the wastgate between gears, when I added a dump valve it drowned out the sound of the wastgate with the dumping sound. Kind of preferred the noise it made pre-dump valve but it did pick up much quicker between gear changes afterwards.

Wish my A4 was that quick!

JayB5UK...thanks for correcting me.

so going back to my original compliant of a 'fluttering' noise from the wastegate......is this the wastegate faulty / sticking?

is the wastegate fixed premanently to the turbo?

cheers

Re: Replacing the Diverter Valve

No, if it's only doing it upon gear changing then that's normal.

It's just that normally with the insulated effect of standard air filter box and pipework you can't really hear it, plus yours is boosting harder by the looks of your sig.

It's an integral part of the turbo itself, i'll try and direct you to a decent picture detailing the exhaust side of a turbo and point out where it is. It either looks like a kind of flap or a round valve that pops open (attached to the actuator) into the exhaust outlet casting of the turbo.

Re: Replacing the Diverter Valve

I have misled you in an earlier post, I didn't mean it to sound like the inlet and outlet side of the turbo are connected. The wastegate is on the exhaust side of the turbo, and it basically opens so the the exhaust gas coming out of the engine is allowed to escape out and down the exhaust system, reducing the effect of the turbocharger. If it is closed, the gas is kept in to drive the turbine round more and mean that the compessor side compresses (no really?!) the air and pump it round and towards the engines inlet side. obviously the actuator does vary the amount the wastegate is open by to regulate the amount of boost generated.

Hope I haven't confused you too much mate!

here's a link which may be useful i just found;

oh dear 2.5tdi and fluttering noises can end up in turbo's being replaced, either that or egr pipe cracked. also split boost pipes can cause this but noise would be more of a hissing noise as well.

best you book it in a get it looked at properly, you never know it might just be normal noises!

Those attachements are pictures of an A3 transversley mounted engine... yours is longitudinally mounted, i.e. 90degrees out (front to back instead of across the car). Check my reply in the other thread for details of where to find the DV

Don't forget that when they mention the DV being on the passenger side of the car (as in Link 1 above) that the site is an American one... so it will be drivers side over here. Just to avoid to confusion
