    Should i buy this 2005 1.8 TT?

My missus has been out for a test drive in a 05 plate 2005 1.8TT (180hp) today and wants to buy it. Dark blue, unmarked inside and out, not much in terms of extras only a 6CD changer, 76000 miles. Dealer (non audi) wants £6400. I can't get home till friday to check it. Is it the right price? If so what should i be looking out for in terms of problems? We are looking to sell our 2004 A4 Avant 1.9tdi q Sport with 111,000 on it which has no problems, just want a smaller newer car, but don't want to buy a problem.

Sounds too expensive to me. I paid 6000 for my 51 plate 4 years ago with 50000 miles on it and it was the 225 model. I'd say leave it but good luck telling your missus that lol

She just paid a deposit. Haggling is going to be a bit difficult now

The only thing i've been told to look out for so far is perishing hoses for all the engine pressure sensors. No one is warning me to look out for exploding 1.8T engines or bits falling off the car. This will be my first petrol turbo car (first petrol car for over 15 years) and apparently its good for a remap.... oh dear...

Yeh make sure the cambelt and water pump have been changed. Also the haldex should have been changed i think or it will need it soon. there was a coilpack recall a couple months ago but that was a freebie with audi so can always check that one yourself. Check the dashpod is alright and the temperature gauge and mpg count is working. If none of them are done then your looking at over £1000 to get them fixed

Well we bought it anyway. Wife is very happy, loves it to bits. Been for a spin, quite fun to drive. Missing a bit of diesel style torque, perhaps a remap is in order. Lot of road noise from the Pirellis that are on it, especially on coarse surfaces. What should i replace the tyres with?

Thanks dzTT. I checked the cambelt had been done, but i doubt they did the waterpump but i am aware of that now. Hopefully easier than my old 2.5TDI V6.
When you refer to the Haldex, this is only the FWD version, iirc the Haldex is the 4WD unit (current quattro we have and previous all mechanical pre-Haldex so not familiar with it).
Think i noticed a requirement for gearbox oil change when hacking through the service book, is this right? Need to read it again.
Thanks for the coilpack note, whats the symptoms if theres a problem?
Spotted the dashpod problem somewhere on the net, this one looks absolutely pristine and all works, no evidence of DIS malfunction either.

Get the sump off and change the pickup NOW before it gives issue. Service history is worth nothing on these things .Change it to fixed servicng from AVS too

Ahh ok wont have to worry about the Haldex then. The gearbox oil is probably worth getting changed anyway but it depends on the mileage. cant remember what it recomends in the book.

the coilpacks there was no real issue that i had but when you phone up audi with the chassis number they should be able to tell you if they are amongst the faulty batch

Only problem so far has been that the plastic covers on the safety belt sockets have popped off, gone back to dealer to get it fixed. First long run coming up this weekend, quick 600mile blip to the Midlands and around.

Pleasantly surprised at 39-40mpg cruising at 80 (fierce self restraint following previous Sundays ticket in the beemer, it keeps tugging to go) and also comfortable for 4-5 hours at a stretch. Bloody huge boot swallowed ingredients for birthday dinner for 8 plus 3 days worth of luggage for 2.
Need to replace tyres as not much left above the wear blocks and the winter rains are coming. Want something with a bit less road noise (currently 5 year old Pirellis on the back). Any advice?

I've got Verdstien Ultrac Sessanta on my A3 the now. can't really complain about them not had much road noise at all. Had Michelin PS2 on my TT and they were very noisy. Changed them for some Falken FK452 and they were very good tyre for the price. Also had Bridgestone Potenza on the A3 but they seemed to wear rather quickly

you will have four ignition coils.
one coil per cylinder bank and it sits on top
    of the spark plug.
when it fails you will lose compression and the engine will run lumpy. i hope that helps.
